The Sault College Cougars women’s hockey team met Dakota College in Ashland, Wisconsin over the Saturday, January 28th and Sunday, January 29th weekend for a two-game non-conference series. The Ladyjacks, ranked 3rd in the Western Conference, finished second last year at the National Championships after a 2-1 loss against Assiniboine Community College.

In the first game, both teams took time to settle, with the Ladyjacks opening the scoring six minutes into the second period. However, Emma Lee scored for the Cougars five minutes later to level the score. In the third period, Meagan Daley gave the Cougars the lead, but the Ladyjacks equalized on a power play. A tripping call with nine minutes left in the game gave the Cougars a man advantage, and Amy Carlson scored the winning goal with a shot from the blueline. Emily Hansen made 23 saves in the victory.

The second game was penalty-filled and allowed both teams to work on special teams. The first period was scoreless, with the Cougars having 7 shots on goal. Jasmine Groleau and Daley gave the Cougars a two-goal lead heading into the final 20 minutes. Groleau scored again early in the third period, but the Ladyjacks capitalized on two power plays to reduce the deficit but the Cougars held them off with key saves by first-year goaltender Cassidy Dobson and a strong penalty kill to earn a 3-2 win.

The Cougars (20-0-0) host the University of Notre Dame (3-7-0) on February 4 (6:30pm) for the Winter Classic and Senior Recognition game and February 5 (12:30pm) at the Rankin Arena.
