History will be made on Saturday, October 10th, when the Sault College Cougars host their first-ever Ontario Football Conference (OFC) playoff game in Sault Ste. Marie.

The undefeated Cougars will welcome the Ottawa Sooners to Superior Heights for a 2026 OFC Football semifinal, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

For Sault College, the matchup represents another major milestone in the rapid growth of the program.

After finishing the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record, the Cougars are now just one victory away from earning a berth in the OFC championship game.

Among the players helping lead the Cougars into Saturday’s semifinal is second-year running back Sam Mustaspha, who joined the program after coming to Sault College from Windsor, Ontario.

For Mustaspha, the 2026 season has been a special one both personally and as a member of a team that has yet to experience defeat.

“Personally, it’s been a really special season,” Mustaspha said. “I’ve put a lot of work in during the offseason, and I’ve been fortunate to see that work translate onto the field.”

While the individual results have been rewarding, Mustaspha believes the Cougars’ success is a reflection of the entire organization.

“Being 8-0 is something we’re proud of, but I think it says more about the work everyone has put in as a team. We’ve pushed each other every day, and it means a lot to be part of a group that has stayed focused and committed all season.”

From Building a Program to an 8-0 Team

The Cougars’ journey to an undefeated regular season is particularly impressive considering how quickly the program has developed.

Mustaspha was part of the team during its first season, when the Cougars were establishing the foundation of a new football program.

Now, just one year later, the atmosphere surrounding the team is considerably different.

“The growth has been huge,” Mustaspha explained. “In my first season, we were still building the foundation and figuring out who we wanted to be as a program.”

This season, Mustaspha has seen a team that has developed confidence, chemistry and belief in what it can accomplish.

“This year, you can see the confidence, chemistry, and belief throughout the entire team. We’ve grown not just on the field, but also as teammates, as a program and a family.”

That growth has also created a stronger sense of accountability throughout the organization.

“Everyone understands their role, and we’re holding each other accountable.”

A Familiar Opponent

Saturday’s semifinal opponent is certainly not an unfamiliar one.

The Cougars have already faced the Ottawa Sooners three times in 2026, including an exhibition matchup and two regular-season contests.

Sault College opened its 2026 schedule with a 23-0 exhibition victory over Ottawa in North Bay on August 9th.

The two teams then met in regular-season action, with the Cougars earning a 48-27 victory in Ottawa on August 29th.

When the Sooners travelled to Sault Ste. Marie on September 12th, the Cougars once again came away victorious, defeating Ottawa 43-21.

Despite those three victories, Mustaspha knows Saturday’s semifinal will be a completely different challenge.

“That game showed us that we have to play a complete four quarters of football,” he said.

The Cougars may have won their previous meetings, but Mustaspha believes there are still lessons to be taken from those games.

“Even though we came away with the win, there were definitely things we could have done better. We learned from our mistakes, and we know the semifinal is going to be a completely different game.”

For the Cougars, the focus will be on execution and discipline.

“We have to execute, stay disciplined, and not take anything for granted.”

Expect Adjustments From Ottawa

Having already faced Sault College three times, the Sooners enter Saturday’s semifinal with plenty of film to study.

Ottawa has had the entire season to evaluate the Cougars and identify areas where it believes it can make adjustments.

But Mustaspha believes the Cougars are equally prepared.

“We know they’re going to come in with a plan, just like we are.”

With both teams familiar with one another, Mustaspha believes the semifinal could ultimately come down to preparation and execution.

“For us, it’s about focusing on ourselves, studying the film, and being prepared for whatever they show us.”

At this stage of the season, there are few surprises.

“Everyone knows everyone pretty well, so it comes down to execution, preparation, and who can make the plays when they matter most.”

A Different Kind of Football Game

A semifinal carries a different level of intensity than a regular-season contest.

One mistake can end a season. One big play can change the direction of a game. And for the Cougars, Saturday also represents an opportunity to make another significant piece of program history.

Mustaspha says the team understands what is at stake.

“The mindset is to treat it like our biggest game because it is.”

The Cougars aren’t looking ahead to the OFC championship game.

Their attention is squarely on Ottawa.

“We’re not looking past the Sooners or thinking about the championship yet. We’re focused on the next play, the next drive, and doing our jobs for each other.”

That approach has helped Sault College navigate an undefeated regular season, and Mustaspha believes the team must rely on the preparation that has brought it to this point.

“We’ve worked all season to put ourselves in this position, so now we have to trust our preparation and play with confidence.”

One Win Away

After an 8-0 regular season, the Cougars are now just one victory away from playing for an OFC championship.

For Mustaspha and his teammates, reaching the final would be another major step forward for a program that is still in its early years.

“It would mean a lot,” Mustaspha said.

He understands how far the program has come in a short period of time.

“Going from building a new program to being one win away from a championship game is something everyone in this organization should be proud of.”

But the Cougars aren’t satisfied with what they have already accomplished.

An undefeated regular season is impressive, but it doesn’t guarantee anything once the playoffs begin.

“We know 8-0 doesn’t mean anything if we don’t take care of business now.”

The goal is simple: win Saturday and earn the opportunity to compete for an OFC championship.

“We want to keep building on what we’ve accomplished and give ourselves the opportunity to play for a championship. That’s what we’ve been working toward all season.”

History Awaits at Superior Heights

Saturday night’s matchup will be about much more than an undefeated record or a semifinal victory.

It will be the first-ever OFC Football playoff game hosted by the Sault College Cougars in Sault Ste. Marie, giving the local football community an opportunity to witness another important chapter in the development of the program.

The Cougars enter the game at 8-0, while the Ottawa Sooners will be looking to end Sault College’s perfect season and advance to the OFC championship game.

The Cougars have already defeated Ottawa three times this season, but the playoffs offer a clean slate.

Four quarters will determine which team moves on.

For Sault College, the opportunity is clear: protect home field, continue the undefeated season and take one more step toward an OFC championship.

The stage is set.

One game. One opportunity. One win away from the championship game.
