Marie’s Sportsperson of the Year. Sault Ste. Marie’s Sportsperson of the Year trophy was donated by A.Y. Broughton, a past District Governor of Rotary, in honour of his father, also a Rotarian, the late H. P. Broughton.
“It’s really an honour to be selected as a top male athlete of the year. I’d like to thank my teammates this year for always being there for me and pushing me everyday to better athlete and person,” said St Mary’s Knight Daniel Bumbaco.
Ray Basawa told Saultsports that “I am extremely humbled and honoured to be receiving this award. I began coaching as a way to give back as coaches that coached me gave their time and to play a small role in the development of future student athletes to come. Curtis Grandmont was a big influence as one of my coaches who a former Bawating Standout and my junior basketball coach and passed away tragically in a house fire. I feel very fortunate that I was able to coach at multiple schools basketball at Bawating , White Pines and Football at Korah and the athletic heads at each school entrusted me to do so.”
“Big thanks to the Korah Staff , principal Steve Caruso, Athletic Department Head Greg Arbour and Coaches Tom Annett , Marco Bernabucci for the nomination and to the Men’s athletic Association for voting me in the Hall. And to Rotary for everything they do for the community. I am truly honoured,” added Ray.
