Greyhounds Sweep Weekend Series with Two Wins Over Visiting U16 Wolves

Over the December 13th and 14th weekend, the Soo U18 Greyhounds welcomed the Sudbury U16 Wolves to the John Rhodes Centre for a pair of GNU18HL matchups, beginning with game one on Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds set the tone early and never looked back, skating to a convincing 4–1 victory. Soo opened the scoring just 1:47 into the first period when Finlay Carlson netted his sixth goal of the season, finishing a play set up by Nathan Dupuis and Myka Venneri. The home side continued to apply pressure and doubled their lead at the 9:42 mark as Jacob Vincent buried his 12th of the campaign, with assists going to Nico Bossio and Espen Escasa.

Late in the opening frame, the Greyhounds struck again. With 2:13 remaining in the period, Espen Escasa added his team-leading 20th goal of the season off a feed from Makks Demidovich, sending Soo into the intermission with a commanding 3–0 advantage.

After a scoreless middle stretch, the Greyhounds extended their lead late in the second period. At 17:48, Carlson recorded his second goal of the game and seventh of the season, converting passes from Finlay Escasa and Anthony Carbone to make it 4–0.

Sudbury managed to break the shutout midway through the third period when Bradley Huffman scored his fourth of the season at 11:37, assisted by ty belanger and chase baronette, but that would be as close as the Wolves would come.

In goal, Gavin Zuccato turned in a strong performance for the Greyhounds, while Noah Jylha handled the crease duties for Sudbury. The win gave Soo a solid start to the weekend series on home ice.

The Soo U18 Greyhounds completed a successful weekend at the John Rhodes Centre on Sunday morning, skating to a dominant 6–1 victory over the Sudbury U16 Wolves in game two of their GNU18HL series.

Soo opened the scoring midway through the first period. At 5:33, Nathan Dupuis recorded his 10th goal of the season, finishing a setup from Jackson Thornton and nico bossio to give the Greyhounds a 1–0 lead after one.

The offence picked up in the second period as the Greyhounds took control of the game. Just 4:26 in, Anthony Carbone scored his first goal of the season on an unassisted effort to make it 2–0. Sudbury responded shortly after on the power play when Lennox Therrien notched his ninth of the season at the 6:00 mark, with assists from Merik Maillet and Malik Jakubo, cutting the deficit to one.

Any momentum gained by the Wolves was quickly shut down by Soo. At 16:29, Nico Bossio restored the two-goal cushion with his 14th of the season, assisted by Finlay Escasa and Espen Escasa. Bossio struck again late in the period at 18:22, wiring home his 15th of the campaign off a feed from Jackson Thornton to give the Greyhounds a 4–1 advantage heading into the third.

The Greyhounds continued to press in the final frame. Hunter thorkilson made it 5–1 at 7:11, scoring his 12th goal of the season with help from Espen Escasa. Bossio capped off a standout performance at 12:40, completing the hat trick with his 16th of the season, assisted by Frankie Reda.

With the win, the Soo U18 Greyhounds secured a weekend sweep over Sudbury, outscoring the Wolves 10–2 over the two games and showcasing their offensive depth and defensive structure on home ice.

Greyhound coach Jeremy Stevenson told Saultsports that “it was a good weekend for us. The players are playing more consistent. They kept the tempo and intensity high all weekend. Nothing changes for next weekend as we want to keep up the fast and intense game.”
