After having their eight-game winning streak snapped by the Niagara IceDogs in St. Catharines on Thursday, January 29th, the third place west division (29-15-1-1) Soo Greyhounds quickly turned the page and hit the road, heading across the border into Pennsylvania to take on the fifth place midwest division (14-27-2-2) Erie Otters. Looking to rebound in OHL action on Friday, January 30th, the Hounds faced a tough test against an Otters squad on home ice, aiming to rediscover the pace and intensity that fueled their recent run of success.
The Greyhounds headed into Friday night’s matchup looking to turn the tables against the Erie Otters after dropping their only previous meeting this season, a 5–2 loss in Erie on October 22, 2025.
The Soo Greyhounds endured a tough night on the road, falling 3–2 in a shootout to the Erie Otters, marking their second straight loss as they continue a challenging stretch of the schedule.
The Soo opened the scoring late in the first period when Christopher Brown notched his 17th goal of the season at 17:25, finishing a play set up by Chase Reid and Lukas Fischer to give the Hounds early momentum. Erie answered early in the second period as Jake Murray tied the game at 2:22 with his fifth of the year, assisted by Tristen Trevino and Tyler Cooper.
The Otters grabbed their first lead of the night midway through the second when Michael Dec buried his 19th of the season at 14:47, with Andrew Kuzma and McLean Agrette picking up the helpers. Erie carried that 2–1 advantage into the third period, putting pressure on the Greyhounds to find a response.
That response came late. With just under four minutes remaining in regulation, Jeremy Martin came through in the clutch, scoring his 17th of the campaign at 16:19 to pull the Soo even at 2–2, sending the game to overtime and eventually a shootout.
Despite a strong performance from Soo goaltender Carter George, who stopped 21 of 23 shots in regulation and overtime, the Otters prevailed in the skills competition. Erie shooters Ulysses Lombardi and McLean Agrette both converted, while Marco Mignosa was the lone Greyhound to find the back of the net in the shootout. Former Greyhound Noah Tegelaar, who was dealt at the 2026 trade deadline, stood tall in goal for Erie to secure the win against his old club.
With the back-to-back losses now in the books, the Greyhounds will look to bounce back quickly as they return to Ontario for a Sunday afternoon showdown. Sault Ste. Marie is set to face the Brantford Bulldogs in a 2:00 p.m. matinee on February 1st, hoping to regain momentum as the season continues to heat up.
