On Wednesday, May 31st and June 1st student athletes from St Mary’s College, Korah Collegiate, Superior Heights, Central Algoma, and White Pines headed to Sudbury to take part in one hundred track and field events being held by Lockerby High School on the campus of Laurentian University for the 2023 NOSSA Track and Field Championships.
Korah senior Katelyn Tull led the Algoma student athletes with two golds at the 2023 NOSSA Track and Field Championships with a 13.06 second 100m dash along with a 10.79m jump in the triple jump in Sudbury on Thursday, June 1st. St Mary’s Abigail Jaremko won her gold in the junior women’s 300m hurdles in a time of 51.09 seconds. Julia Heika joined her Knight teammate Jaremko with a gold in with a 4.66m jump in the junior women’s long jump.
St Mary’s Knight Amare Valente-Boateng, Steelhawk Sebastien Brassard, and CASS Huskie Dawson Merling brought home golds in their respective events with Amare Valente-Boateng jumping 5.79m in the men’s novice long jump while Huskie Dawson Merling threw 42.87 metres in the men’s junior discus throw. Sebastin Brassard ran a 16.45 second 100 meter in the novice hurdles to earn the Superior Heights student athlete a gold in Sudbury. Korah led Algoma student athletes with a total of four gold medals with Delaney Elliot running a 1:13:24 in the senior women’s hurdles, Ethan Carbone representing the Colts with a 6.10m senior long jump for a gold. Emily Bateman and Coulson Bell rounded the golds for Korah with Bateman’s 1.35m jump in the junior women’s high jump while Bell’s came in the men’s junior long jump with a distance of 5.83m. In the men’s javelin throw, Kolton Tremblay threw 43.22m for a junior gold.
Algoma student athletes also tallied a total of 24 silvers, 21 bronze and numerous other placings at the 2023 NOSSA Track and Field Championships.
All eleven Sault Ste Marie students athletes who won gold at the 2023 NOSSA Track and Field Championships will be representing Algoma at the 2023 OFSAA Track and Field Championships in our nation’s capital of Ottawa, Ontario from June 8th to 10th at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility.
