The Algoma University Thunderbirds announced on Friday, March 7th that Edmonton native Ivan Romanchak has committed to the men’s soccer program for the upcoming season.
Romanchak, a winger who has been playing soccer since the age of five, brings a wealth of experience from clubs such as CF Pozuelo De Alarcón, FK Indija, and FK Zeleznicar. His impressive playing background includes competition in League 1 Alberta and the ACAC Provincials, where he showcased his speed, technical ability, and finishing skills.
A proven goal-scorer, Romanchak earned multiple Player of the Game awards and was the top scorer at FK Zeleznicar in the second half of the season. He describes himself as a “fast, technical winger with good finishing and crossing ability with both feet, playing with a German-Spanish-Serbian-Ukrainian style.” His dedication, hard work, and discipline will make him a valuable asset to the Thunderbirds.
Off the pitch, Romanchak is fully committed to the game, with football as his sole focus. He will be studying Business Accounting at Algoma this Fall and has a strong academic background, earning honours from grades 7 to 11.
When asked why he chose Algoma, Romanchak highlighted the coaching staff’s expertise and vision for the program. “The knowledge that both Coach Andreychuk and Coach Kowal have about football, and the vision Coach Andreychuk has for turning Algoma into a top program, made my decision easy. In addition, they are both Ukrainian makes me feel comfortable, knowing I’ll be coached by someone who shares my background and has the discipline to push me to be my best every session and match.”
