Under cloudy skies the whole weekend of September 30th and October 1st, the Sault College Cougars hosted the Fanshawe Falcons on Saturday followed by the Seneca Sting on Sunday at IDA Park in Sault Ste Marie for OCAA men’s baseball action.
Sault College Cougars had trouble keeping up with Fanshawe Falcons in a 14 -1 loss on Saturday at IDA Park.
Fanshawe Falcons got on board in the first inning after an error scored one run.
A single by Sherwin, an error, and a double by Normadin helped the Falcons extend their early lead in the second.
Fanshawe extened their early lead with two runs in the top of the third thanks to RBI errors by Howard and Sherwin.
Howard homered to the left field, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth for the Falcons.
Fanshawe scored five runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning, Peddal singled, scoring one run, Wheeler doubled, scoring two runs and Normadin doubled scoring two runs.
Knelson earned the win for Fanshawe. They surrended three hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out three and walking four. Nolan Toni pitched four and one third innings in relief for the Cougars. The righty gave up five hits and seven runs (six earned) while, striking out four and walking three. Lucas Ingratta took the for Sault College. The right handed pitcher went two and two third innings, surrending seven runs (one earned) on five hits, striking out four and walking three.
Travis Rainey and Marc Chamberlain each collected two hots for the Cougars. Connor Bruzas went 1 for 1 at the plate as they led the team with one run battled in.
Fanshawe tallied 10 hits in the game. Normadin and Howard each collected three hits for the Falcons. Normadin drove the middle of the lineup, leading Fanshawe with three runs battled in. The three hole hitter went 3 for 5 on the day. Peddal collected two hits for the Falcons in three at bats. Sherwin lead the visitors with three walks. Overall the team had a strong eye at the plate, talling six walks for the game.
In game two of the double on Saturday afternoon, the Cougars lost to the Falcons 5 – 3 at IDA Park.
Fanshawe got on the board in the first inning after a dropped third strike scored one run.
The Cougars captured the lead, 2 – 1, in the bottom of the first after the Falcons commited an error, and Matthew Forsey walked, each scoring one run.
The visitors captured the lead, 5 – 2, in the top of the fifth when Wheeler singled, scoring one run, Lawlor double, scoring two runs, and Stratton singled, scoring one run.
Foster earned the win for the Falcons. They gave up zero hits and two runs (zero earned) over three innings, striking out five and walking five. Carter Gallivan started the for Sault College. They gave up one and one run (zero earned) over four and two thirds innings, striking out nine and walking one. MacArthur earned the save.
Aiden Russel and Bryce Blixit each collected one hit for Sault College. Forsey and Dylan Rudge each drove in one run for the Cougars. Sault College had patience at the plate, accumulating eight walks for the game. Forsey, Rudge, and Russel led the team with two free passes each.
Lawlor provided pop in the middle of the lineup and Fanshawe with two runs battled in. The first baseman went for 1 for 4 on the day. Stratton, Wheeler, Lawlor, and Whalen each collected one for the the Falcons.
On Sunday, October 1st, the Cougars scored seven runs in the sixth inning, which helped them defeat the Seneca Sting 12 – 3 at IDA Park. Pagliero induced Jayden Valle to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored, Aiden Russel doubled, scoring three runs, Marc Chamberlain singled, scoring two runs, and an error scored one run.
Seneca got on board in the top of the first inning after McCullough tripled, and Sault College commited an error, each scoring one run.
The Cougars captured the lead, 5 – 2 in the bottom of the fourth when Liam Nordby singled, scoring one run, Bryce Blixit hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, and Valle sinlged, scoring two runs.
Matthew Forsey earned the win for the Cougars. The right handed pitcher gave up seven hits and three runs (one earned) over four and one third innings, striking out two and walking two. Devine took the loss for the Sting. The starting pitcher went four innings, allowing five runs on five hits, striking out three and walking four. Cole Masse and Gavin Lamming each cameon in relief for Sault College.
The Cougars collected 11 hits in the game. Dylan Rudge, Russel, and Nordby each collected two hits for Sault College. Valle led the Cougars with three runs battled in. They went 1-for-3 on the day. Jordan Ritchie led Sault College with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, collecting six walks for the game. The Cougars turned one double play in the game.
The Sting collected nine hits in the game. McCullough went 3 for 4 at the plate to lead Seneca in hits. Rolfe and McCullough each drove in one run for the Sting. Ngo collected two hits for Seneca in three at bats.
In the final game of a doubleheader of the weekend, Will Nevills collected three hits in three at bats, as the Cougars defeated the Sting 9 – 7 at IDA Park. Nevills singled in the first inning, singled in the sixth inning, and singled in the third.
Sault College got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Aiden Russel grounded out, Seneca commited an error and Nevills singled, each scoring one run.
The Sting captured the lead, 4 – 3, in the top of the second when Rhind hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, Ngo singled, scoring one run, and Brodwah singled, scoring two runs.
The Cougars made the score 7 – 4 in the bottom of the third after Rowe induced Matthew Forsey to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored, and Bryce Blixit doubled, scoring three runs.
Owen Daynard earned the win for Sault College. They surrended seven hits and four runs over and two thirds innings, striking out none and walking one. Rowe took the loss for the Sting. They went three innings surrendering seven runs (five earned) on eight Hits, striking out two and walking two. Gavin Lamming collected the save. Cole Wright appeared in relief for the Cougars.
Sault College collected 11 hits in the game. Blixit went 2 for 3 at the plate as they lead the team with four runs batted in. Liam Nordby and Travis Rainey each collected multiple hits for the Cougars.
The Sting tallied nine hits in the game. Brodwah and Mahoney each collected two hits for Seneca. Brodwah led the Sting with two runs battled in. They went 2 for 4 on the day.
The Cougars close out the 2023 regular season on October 7th for 11:00 a.m and 1:00 p.m games against the visiting Sheridan College Bruins at IDA Park.
