Sault College Cougar and Korah Colts football alumnus Donny Matthews has been named the recipient of the 2025 Len Monico Award, recognizing him as the Sault Minor Football League’s “Volunteer of the Year.” At just 19 years old, Matthews has proven himself not only on the field, but in the community—earning praise for his tireless dedication, leadership, and selfless service to the next generation of young athletes.

Known across the league as “The Voice of Sault Minor Football,” Korah Colt alumni Matthews has spent his Sundays in the broadcast booth, announcing every SMFL game with passion and professionalism. But this season, he took his commitment a step further—volunteering as a coach for an Atom division team, where his impact was felt deeply by players, parents, and fellow coaches alike.

“Donny perhaps is the ultimate team guy,” said Cougars head coach Paul Orazietti. “He works hard and does his job. Matthews never complains and digs in where others won’t. He’s a glue type of guy who holds a team together by filling in the gaps where he is needed. Every team should be fortunate to have Donny Matthews on their squad. He is a tremendous person and I know he’s working hard to become a good football player.”

Matthews’ efforts have not gone unnoticed by league leadership. Tony Boniferro, executive member of the Sault Minor Football League, emphasized just how rare it is to see someone so young take on such a heavy workload. “Donny announces every game and dedicates eight hours of his time, every Sunday, to help Sault Minor Football. Not only did he take on that role, but he jumped into coaching this season as well. He was outstanding with the kids and a real leader. Donny took on a tremendous amount of work this season, and you don’t see many 19 year olds who step up like he has. We really appreciate his dedication and contribution to our league.”

Whether it’s in the broadcast booth, on the sidelines, or suiting up for the Cougars, Donny Matthews exemplifies what it means to be a leader both on and off the field. His receipt of the Len Monico Award is a testament to his character, and a reflection of the lasting impact he’s making in the Sault football community.
