At the Northern Community Centre in front of a full house crowd, the Korah Colts took to the ice to face th Superior Heights Steelhawks in Sault Ste Marie Girls High School Hockey exhibition action for the 2023 Girls High School Tournament championship game on Thursday, April 6th.
At 7:24 of the opening period, Lundyn Beaulieu opened the scoring for the Colts with a goal behind Steelhawk goaltender Pippa Holmes to give Korah a 1 – 0 lead. Avery Stephens and Hayley Howe notching the helpers on Beaulieu’s goal. Skyler Ruschpler finds the back of Korah netminder Sara Boston’s net for Superior Heights lone goal of the championship at 1:56 with Riley Pietramale and Alana Johnson drawing the contributors on Ruschpler’s goal. With 18 seconds remaining in the period, Sierra Stefanizzi sends the Colts into the first intermission up 2 – 1 with Kylie Schryer adding the lone assist on Stefanizzi’s goal. At eleven minutes even in the middle stanza, Schryer registers her second point of the game with Korah’s third of the game. Bianca Biagini notched the contributor on Schryer’s goal. Avery Clement increases the Colts lead to 4 – 1 at 4:25 of the second with Tyya McKenzie and Annika Babineau setting up Clement’s goal.
Biagini scores Korah’s fifth goal at 13:42 of the third to bring the Colts lead to 5 – 1. Schryer and Stefanizzi had the assists on Biagini’s goal. Finding the back of the Steelhawks net for her second of the period, Korah’s Biagini fires the Colts behind Holmes to give the brown and goal a 6 – 1 lead at 7:14. Stefanizzi and Schryer drew the helpers on Biagini’s third point of the game. With 4:36 of the third, Paige Lortie gives the Colts a 7 – 1 championship win with Beaulieu and Megan Russo contributing on Lortie’s goal.
The Sault Ste Marie High School Athletic committee will now take a long look at possibly adding girls high school hockey to the 2023 – 2024 sports schedule in Sault Ste Marie.
