The Korah Colts and the St Mary’s Knights hit the ice at the John Rhodes Centre to open up the 2024 portion of the Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League season on Sunday, January 7th.
Preston Miller wrapped the opening goal around the left post of Knight goaltender Grant Matthewson’s net to give the Colts a 1 – 0 lead at 8:53 of the first period. Donny Hernden and Daego Campagna added the helpers on Miller’s goal. St Mary’s Daniel Guzzo picked up a turnover in Korah’s end to split Korah defense to fire a snapshot under Colt Payton Melchoirre’s left pad to even the game 1 – 1. Lucas Green notched the helpers on Guzzo’s tying goal. 16 seconds into the second period, Koen Manchulenko batted the go-ahead goal out of mid air in front the Knights net to give the Colts a 2 – 1 lead with Colton Greene and Tyler Lang drawing the assists on Manchulenko’s goal. Nathan Guizietti fires a pass from the right corner to Hunter Thorkilson in front of the Knights net between the circles all alone to sink the Colts third of the game shorthanded at 8:31 of the second. Daniel Guzzo catches a pass from Lucas Green from the right boards to pull the Knights within one to find the back of Melchoirre’s net through the Colt netminder’s five hole at 14:33 of the third. With 66 seconds remaining in regulation, Nick Kelly picks up a rebound of off Melchoirre’s chest to sink the tying goal over the Korah netminder’s blocker to finish the game with a 3 – 3 tie. Green and Anthony Blonda added the contributors on Kelly’s tying goal.
Next action for the Colts will be on Tuesday, January 9th when they face the Superior Heights Steelhawks at the Northern Community Centre in a 3:30 p.m puck drop while the Knights will face the Steelhawks on Friday, January 12th at the John Rhodes Centre in a 7:30 p.m.
