On Wednesday, March 9th, the Superior Heights Steelhawks took to the ice to face the St Mary’s Knights at the John Rhodes Centre in Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League action for the final regular season matchup of the 2021 – 2022.
Tristan Gioia opened the scoring for the Steelhawks at 12:27 of the second period with finding the back of St Mary’s goaltender Jaxon Alexander to give Superior Heights a 1 – 0 lead. Owen Case drew the lone helper on Gioia’s goal. With the Steelhawks on the powerplay, Gioia sinks his second of the contest 29 seconds before the midway mark of the period to bring the lead to 2 – 0 for Superior Heights. Ray Rumiel and Case notched the contributors on Gioia’s powerplay goal. Giving the Steelhawks a 3 – 0 lead at 10:11 of the period, Clark Parker increases the lead to 3 – 0 with Brady DesChense adding the only assist on the Steelhawks third goal. Ben Laderoute closes the gap to two with a Knights goal behind Steelhawk netminder Tyler Greco for St Mary’s lone goal of the game at 3:30 of the middle stanza with Christian Omollo drawing the helper. 1:51 into the final period and shorthanded, Superior Heights Rumiel gives the Steelhawks a 4 – 1 lead with Case contributing on Rumiel’s goal. Registering a hat trick with an unassisted goal, Gioia sinks the Steelhawks fifth at 5:16 to give Superior Heights a 5 – 1 win over the Knights.
The Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League will now have a one game semi – final between the Superior Heights Steelhawks and Korah Colts on Thursday, March 10 at the John Rhodes Centre at 3:30 p.m to determine who will meet the St Mary’s Knights in the best of three Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League City Championship series starting on March 21st in a 3:30 p.m start at the John Rhodes Centre.
