Cardinals Clinch the 2026 NOSSA Girls Hockey Championships with Win Over Bears

On day two of the 2026 NOSSA Girls Hockey Championships in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the St. Charles Cardinals of Sudbury battled the Scollard Hall Bears of North Bay at the Northern Community Centre on Tuesday, March 10th, with both teams looking to secure a berth at the upcoming OFSAA Girls Hockey Championships.

The Bears opened the scoring midway through the first period on the power play. At 5:19, Jade White netted her first goal of the NOSSA tournament to give Scollard Hall a 1–0 lead. Payton Cyr and Addison Knight each picked up assists on the play as the Bears capitalized with the man advantage.

The Cardinals responded in a big way during the second period, scoring three goals to swing the momentum in their favour.

At 13:47, Alyssa Bryant evened the game for St. Charles with an unassisted tally to make it 1–1.

Just over a minute later, at 12:12, the Cardinals took their first lead of the contest when Ryann Chevrier scored her first of the tournament, assisted by Avery Mininni, putting St. Charles ahead 2–1.

The Cardinals continued their offensive surge only seconds later. At 11:41, Karlie Shea extended the lead to 3–1, again with Avery Mininni picking up the assist for her second helper of the game.

Scollard Hall refused to go away quietly, cutting the deficit late in the frame. With 2:39 remaining, Payton Cyr scored an unassisted goal to pull the Bears back within one at 3–2 heading into the third period.

The Bears pressed for the equalizer in the final frame, eventually pulling their goaltender for an extra attacker in the closing seconds. However, the Cardinals sealed the victory when Carrington Parise found the empty net at 0:13 remaining, scoring unassisted to secure the 4–2 win for St. Charles.

Between the pipes, Kloe Rienguette handled the goaltending duties for the Cardinals, while Tayla Booth stood in net for the Bears.

Earlier in the day at the NOSSA Championships, Scollard Hall Bears defeated Superior Heights Steelhawks 8 – 0 in the 8:30 a.m contest while the Korah Colts fell 5 – 2 to the St Charles Cardinals at 10:30 a.m.

Road to OFSAA, both the St. Charles Cardinals and Scollard Hall Bears have secured spots representing Northern Ontario at the upcoming OFSAA Girls Hockey Championships, scheduled for March 24–26.

The AAA Championship will be hosted in LaSalle, Ontario, while the AA Championship will take place in Cobourg, Ontario, where Northern Ontario’s top teams will compete against the best high school programs from across the province.
