Bumbaco Leads the Knights to the City Championships in Win Over Steelhawks

The St Mary’s Knights took to the field at Superior Heights for the 2022 senior Sault Ste Marie High School Football semi final to meet the Superior Heights Steelhawks on Friday, October 21st. The winner of the semi final will take on the Korah Colts in the 2022 city championships.

Only 1:53 into the semi final, St Mary’s Daniel Bumbaco returned a Steelhawk punt for 55 yards. Bumbaco added an extra point on a Knights convert to give St Mary’s a 7 – 0 lead. At 5:20 of the first, Jack McPherson carries the ball untouched for a six yard major to bring the lead to 14 – 0 with a Bumbaco convert. Scoring the Knights third touchdown of the game with 13.8 second left in the first, Bumbaco rushes 15 yards for his second touchdown of the half to increase the lead to 21 – 0 after Bumbaco’s third successful convert. Bumbaco adds a single point for the Knights with a kick through the Steelhawks endzone after a unsuccessful 19 yard field goal attempt at 5:50. With his second attempt on a field goal from the Superior Heights 31 yard line, Bumbaco brings the lead to 23 – 0 with another single St Mary’s point. At 9:24 of the fourth, Superior Heights tackles a Knight defender in the end zone for a two point Wolverine safety to close the gap to 23 – 2. Bumbaco catches a Gabe Barkley interception to rushes for a Knight 29 yard carry to increase the lead to 30 – 2 another successful convert at 9:16. With 4:26 remaining the semi final with Bumbaco running east to west on the turf and evading three tackles to run for a 65 yard touchdown to bring the lead to 36 – 2. With 12 seconds remaining in the game and the Knights punching their ticket to the city championships, Ethan Neveau runs through the Steelhawk defensive line to carry the ball for a 97 yard carry to give St Mary’s a 42 – 2 win over Superior Heights.

The Knights will now head to the 2022 city championships to meet the Colts in a 7:30 p.m final on Friday, October 28th. The 2022 city championships will be broadcasted live on Saultsports TV.
