With just one point separating them in the NOJHL standings, the Soo Thunderbirds made a statement on Friday, December 12th, shutting out the Espanola Paper Kings 7–0 at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex behind a perfect performance from goaltender Cam Boville.
The visiting Thunderbirds, sitting fourth at 18-9-1-1 entering the night, wasted little time setting the tone against the fifth-place Paper Kings (18-11-0-5). At 9:50 of the opening period, Aiden Atkinson opened the scoring on the powerplay, snapping a shot from the left faceoff circle for his 11th of the season, with Jaxon Turnbull picking up the lone assist. The goal proved to be all Soo would need, but they were far from finished.
Soo doubled the lead midway through the second period when Brayden Gosselin notched his second of the season at 8:41, finishing a play set up by Jayden Arnold. In the dying seconds of the frame, James Legler extended the advantage to 3–0, breaking in alone and backhanding home his 15th of the season on an unassisted breakaway at 19:55.
The Thunderbirds put the game out of reach early in the third. Just eight seconds into a powerplay at 1:37, Landon Hill wired a slapshot into the top corner for his ninth of the campaign, with Shea Chornley and Drew Christian earning assists. Thirty seconds later, Jayden Arnold made it 5–0, scoring his third of the season as Vincent Bondy recorded the helper. The goal prompted a goaltending change for Espanola, with Logan Vale replacing Jack Helkie.
The onslaught continued at 8:44 when Hunter Thorkilson, a Soo U18 Greyhound call-up, scored his first career junior ‘A’ goal, slipping a backhand past Vale with Bondy again assisting. At 9:46, Shea Chornley capped the scoring on the powerplay, burying his sixth of the season with assists from Thorkilson and Turnbull.
Between the pipes, Cam Boville was flawless for Soo, stopping all 18 shots he faced to earn his first NOJHL shutout of the season. Helkie and Vale shared duties for the Paper Kings, combining to allow seven goals on 25 shots.
“The team played great tonight. Cam was exceptional in net. We had contributions from the entire lineup. We really took over the game in the 2nd and our special teams were great tonight.
The Thunderbirds continue their eastern road swing on Saturday, December 13th, when they visit Powassan to face the Voodoos in a 7:00 p.m. puck drop.
