On Monday, March 6th and Tuesday, March 7th four high school teams from across Northern Ontario converged on Sault Ste Marie to take part in the 2023 Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics (NOSSA) Hockey Championships. The Scollard Hall Bears (North Bay), St Charles Cardinals (Sudbury), Superior Heights Steelhawks (Sault Ste Marie), and the St Mary’s Knights (Sault Ste Marie) took to the ice Monday morning at the John Rhodes Centre vying for their chance to head to either the 2023 “AA” (St Catharines) or “AAA” (Windsor) Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) on March 21st to March 23rd.
After opening the 2023 NOSSA Championships with a 5 – 3 loss to the St Charles Cardinals, the St Mary’s Knights of Sault Ste Marie went on to win their next two games to advance to the 2023 NOSSA Championships game to face the 1-1-1 St Charles Cardinals of Sudbury. With a 1 – 1 tie at the end of regulation, Knight forward Gabe Zimbaro found the back of Cardinal netminder Joe Goutchie’s net with 3:39 remaining in overtime to give the Knights a 2 – 1 championship win. With the 2023 title, the St Mary’s Knights decided they will represent Northern Ontario in St Catharines at the 2023 OFSAA “AA” Championships while the Cardinals will head to Windsor to represent the north at the “AAA” championships.
