Two new defencemen are joining the Bird nest!
The Soo Thunderbirds have announced on Friday, June 2 that they have signed 2005-birth-year bluelinersfor the upcoming season.
Power, who is from Kippens, Newfoundland, spent last season with the Mount Academy Saints U18 Prep team, where he had 2 goals and 3 assists in 13 games played.
The 2005-birth-year defenceman also stands 6’1 and weighs 160 pounds.
“Cole can be a strong two-way defenceman in our league,” said Soo Thunderbirds assistant coach and general manager Jamie Henderson. “He is a big, agile player who will certainly boost our offence from the backend.”
“I’m super excited to be part of a great organization and team,” Power added. “I’m relieved that it’s done and now I can focus on getting ready for the season, and I’m eager to get going!”
Thompson, who is from Oshawa, Ontario, spent last season with the GOJHL’s Caledon Bombers, where he had 1 goal and 3 assists in 24 games played.
The 2005-birth-year defenceman also stands 6’1 and weighs 165 pounds.
“Andrew will bring some junior experience to our young backend,” Henderson said. “He is also a strong skater who has a great upside.”
“Ever since I began the recruiting process, it’s always been about developing and winning,” added Andrew Thompson, who signed with the Thunderbirds as a free agent. “The Soo stuck out right away and I remember when they had a great showing at the 2022 Centennial Cup. I’m excited to get going with the Thunderbirds next season and I’m hoping to win the Copeland Cup with them.”
BUSY ON THE BLUELINE
The Thunderbirds have been busy making transactions on the blueline these last two days, as they’ve signed a total four new defencemen and have traded one defenceman away.
The four new defencemen the Thunderbirds have signed are Tyler Entwistle and Adam Kukko, who both signed with the Thunderbirds on June 1, along with Cole Power and Andrew Thompson, who both signed with the Thunderbirds today on June 2.
On June 2, the Thunderbirds have traded defenceman Austin Fellinger to the CCHL’s Renfrew Wolves in exchange for a player development fee.
