The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) announced Monday that defencemen Magnus Veldman (Kirkland Lake Gold Miners) and Frankie Reda (Soo Thunderbirds), along with forward Alexandre Saulnier (Powassan Voodoos), have been named its Three Stars of the Week, for the period ending October 25.
Magnus Veldman, (D) Kirkland Lake Gold Miners: Pacing the Gold Miners back-end in a trio of victories, Veldman’s efforts helped move his club into top spot in the NOJHL standings.
The 19-year-old from Prince Rupert, British Columbia doled out five points, on a goal and four assists, including one on the overtime winner against Hearst Sunday in extending a consecutive game point streak to seven.
Veldman, an alumnus of the Okanagan Warriors U18 AAA system, enters the final week of October tied for second in scoring among league rookie rearguards with a dozen points while sharing top spot in helpers among first-year blueliners with 10.
Frankie Reda, (D) Soo Thunderbirds: A personal season-high featured Reda racking up four points as part of a Thunderbirds’ road triumph in Elliot Lake on Friday.
Skating for his hometown Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario side, the 17-year-old D-man tallied twice and assisted on two others in that road result.
Coming out of the Soo Jr. Greyhounds system, Reda currently leads all NOJHL rookie defencemen in offensive production on six goals and 10 helpers.
Alexandre Saulnier, (F) Powassan Voodoos: Having collected at least one point in his first half-dozen league outings, Saulnier’s four over the weekend helped the Voodoos pick up multiple points in the standings.
Among the contributions by the 16-year-old from Ottawa, Ontario was setting up the tying tally, then supplying the eventual difference maker in the shootout, in a come from behind triumph versus the Soo Eagles. He then assisted on the game-winner Sunday against Espanola.
Playing AAA hockey with the Ottawa Jr. 67s previously, Saulnier has nine points in his initial six NOJHL contests, including three goals.
