At the John Rhodes Centre on Thursday, November 6th, the St. Mary’s Knights and the Superior Heights Steelhawks went head-to-head in Sault Ste. Marie High School Hockey League action, with the Steelhawks skating away with a 4–1 victory thanks to a steady offensive push and key special teams play.
The first period saw both teams trading chances, but neither could find the back of the net as solid goaltending and defensive play kept the score locked at 0–0.
The game opened up in the second period when Superior Heights’ Oliver Austin struck first at 10:36, scoring his third goal of the season with assists from Ty Cond and Drew Hankinson. St. Mary’s responded minutes later as Hunter Jackson buried his second of the year at 7:51, set up by Beau Primeau and Tucker Bennett to tie things at 1–1. However, the Steelhawks reclaimed the lead late in the period when Curtis Johnson scored his first of the season at 2:24, assisted by Alex Hoffe and Thomas Keough, giving Superior Heights a 2–1 edge heading into the final frame.
In the third, the Steelhawks took control of the game with strong special teams play. At 14:46, Ayden Hamilton scored a shorthanded goal — his second of the season — on an unassisted effort to extend the lead to 3–1. Then, with just seven seconds remaining, Ty Cond sealed the victory with another shorthanded tally into an empty net, his second of the season, capping off an impressive all-around performance for Superior Heights.
With the win, the Steelhawks continue to build momentum as they prepare to face the Korah Colts on Wednesday, November 12th at the John Rhodes Centre with a 3:30 p.m. puck drop. The St. Mary’s Knights, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they travel to Thessalon to take on the CASS Huskies on Saturday, November 8th at 7:00 p.m.
