Sault Ste Marie, ON – At the Northern Community Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the Sault College Cougars men’s hockey team hosted the Michigan State Spartans on Friday, October 10th, in ACHA Division II action. Despite a strong start and moments of brilliance from the home side, the visiting Spartans surged in the second and third periods to skate away with a 6–3 victory.
After a scoreless opening frame, the Cougars struck first midway through the second when Caleb Wood netted his second of the season at 9:49, assisted by Brodie Mcleod and Piper Post. Just over two minutes later, Nick Jameus extended the lead to 2–0 with help from Lucas Diberardino and Brock Santa Maria. The momentum, however, quickly shifted as Michigan State responded with three straight goals before the end of the period — from Tyler Kolb, Nolan Kaminski, and Sean McCarthy — giving the Spartans a 3–2 lead heading into the third.
Early in the final frame, the Cougars tied the game when Dylan Winsor scored his first of the season at 1:51, assisted by Gabriel Zimbaro and Nolan Dejardins. The Spartans would again take control on the power play, as Kaminski netted his second of the night at 5:47, followed by tallies from Nich Borchardt at 8:32 and an empty-net marker at 17:55 to seal the win.
In goal, Trennis Riley made 23 saves on 28 shots for the Cougars, while Connor Benoit turned aside 22 of 25 for the Spartans.
The Cougars will look to bounce back next weekend when they travel across the St. Mary’s River to face the LSSU Lakers on October 17th and 18th in another round of ACHA Division II men’s hockey action.
