Sousa Scores Two Early as Colts Hold Off Steelhawks in Battle of the Top Two

On Monday, January 19th, the Sault Ste. Marie Girls’ High School Hockey League showcased a marquee matchup at the Rankin Arena as the first-place Superior Heights Steelhawks (6-1) faced off against the second-place Korah Colts (5-1). With league standings on the line, the Colts struck early and built a lead they would ultimately protect despite a late push from the Steelhawks.

Korah set the tone in the opening period behind the scoring touch of Sarah Sousa. At 11:46, Sousa opened the scoring with her fourth goal of the season, finishing a play set up by Journey Tegosh and Sapphire Recollet-Case. The Colts added to their lead at 7:02 when Sousa struck again, netting her fifth of the year off assists from Hailey Greco and Tegosh to give Korah a 2–0 advantage after one.

The Colts extended their lead early in the second period just 47 seconds in, as Journey Tegosh scored her seventh goal of the season. Aubrey Colletti and Sapphire Recollet-Case picked up the assists on the play, pushing the score to 3–0 and putting Korah firmly in control heading into the final frame.

Superior Heights showed resilience in the third period and began to claw back. At 10:48, Alexe Villebrun buried her league-leading 15th goal of the season with helpers from Grace Curran and Alana Johnstone. The Steelhawks continued to press and pulled within one on the power play at 6:31, when Ava Mount scored her ninth of the season, assisted by Lillian Rumiel and Johnstone. Despite sustained pressure, Korah’s defense and goaltending held strong down the stretch to preserve the victory.

Kaydence Wardell guarded the crease for the Steelhawks, while Britton Notte earned the start for the Colts in a hard-fought contest between two of the league’s top teams.

The Steelhawks will next hit the road on January 28th, traveling to Desbarats to take on the CASS Huskies with a 3:00 p.m. puck drop. The Korah Colts will also face the Huskies in their next outing, hosting CASS at the Rankin Arena on February 2nd with a 2:00 p.m. start.
