The Soo U18 Black Sox headed south to Pickford, Michigan for a doubleheader on Wednesday, May 25th to face the Pickford Varsity Pirates. The Black Sox were credited with the game two win 5 – 0 in the doubleheader in Pickford against the Pirates with a 5 – 0 lead heading into third inning and game cancelled due to weather conditions.
In game one in Pickford, the base paths were crowded for both offenses in a high-scoring game where Pickford Pirates Varsity came out on top against Black Sox 18U, 7-6.
Black Sox 18U lost despite out-hitting Pickford Pirates Varsity eight to six.
Pickford Pirates Varsity took an early lead in the second inning. An error scored one run for Pickford Pirates Varsity.
In the top of the third inning, Black Sox 18U tied things up at two when Cole Masse grounded out, scoring one run.
After Black Sox 18U scored two runs in the top of the fifth, Pickford Pirates Varsity answered with two of their own.
Black Sox 18U scored when Masse doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run and Michael Starzomski doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run. Pickford Pirates Varsity then answered when Connor Clegg doubled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run and Blake Spencer singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.
Pickford Pirates Varsity took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth an error scored one run for Pickford Pirates Varsity, Owen Macdonald grounded out, scoring one run, and an error scored one run for Pickford Pirates Varsity.
Clegg was credited with the victory for Pickford Pirates Varsity. The fireballer lasted four innings, allowing five hits and four runs. Macdonald threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Matthew Forsey took the loss for Black Sox 18U. The righty allowed four hits and two runs over two innings, striking out one and walking one.
Michael Hapanovich started the game for Black Sox 18U. Hapanovich surrendered five runs on two hits over four innings, striking out three and walking one Braylan Rawls started the game for Pickford Pirates Varsity. The hurler allowed zero hits and zero runs over one inning, walking zero.
Ty Beaupre led Black Sox 18U with two hits in four at bats.
Clegg went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Pickford Pirates Varsity in hits.
