(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) The Soo City United Under 13 Girls utilized timely goals and gritty defense to defeat the visiting Sudbury Impact Under 14 soccer team 2-0, Sunday morning at Tom Tipton Field.
The playing conditions were difficult, but the driving rain did not stop the Soo and Sudbury girls from playing an entertaining soccer game. Soo City opened the scoring mid-way through the first half, when Lila Jarrett received a long throw in pass, carried the ball to just outside the 18 yard box before ripping a blistering shot over the head of the Sudbury Impact netminder.
In the second half, it was the Soo’s striker Marissa Levesque receiving a pass down the right sideline beating one defender before rifling a bullet to the far corner of the net to make the game 2-0. Malaya Schikofsky made some timely saves to preserve the shutout in the victory.
Soo City donned red jerseys on game day to celebrate the historic Canadian women’s National soccer team who captured gold in Tokyo last week.
The bright spot for the Soo team was their defensive unit who put on a gritty performance. “Sudbury played a tough-nosed game today. They made us work for our chances on offense”, explained Soo City head coach Michael Magli after the victory. “We challenge our girls to be the hardest working team every time they step on the field. They battled hard today to make us proud.”
A good team needs a variety of players to step up each game and that was what we saw on Sunday. “Sudbury put some pressure on our defense too”, said Magli. “We bent but we did not break. A lot of credit goes to our centre defenders, Alexa O’Dell and Thea Iachetta. All of our defenders gave us quality minutes, but those two carried the load today.”
The Soo City United U13 team are a perfect 3-0 on the season in friendly matches versus the older Sudbury team. Next action for the squad is on Saturday, August 21, 3:00 p.m, versus Sudbury U14 Girls at Tom Tipton Field, Sault Ste Marie.
