After finishing day one at the 2022 Soo Michigan Showcase in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, the Soo 18U Black Sox return to action on Saturday, July 9th with opening day two against Iron Mountain to be followed by their second game of the afternoon against the Ishpeming Blue Storm.
Saturday’s game two of the day against Ishpeming was a heartbreaker for Black Sox 18U, as they lost the lead late in a 12-8 defeat.
The game was tied at seven with Ishpeming batting in the top of the fifth when Sam Dyer singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
Despite the loss, Black Sox 18U did collect 13 hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Ishpeming had 11 hits on the way to victory.
Black Sox 18U got things moving in the first inning, when Keyton Mousseau singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.
After Ishpeming scored four runs in the top of the third, Black Sox 18U answered with four of their own. Ishpeming scored when Luke Koatriev singled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs and Bryce Markham singled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs. Black Sox 18U then answered when Wesley Pomeroy singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run, Mousseau doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run, and Carmine Perna singled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs.
Hunter Smith pitched Ishpeming to victory. The pitcher lasted five innings, allowing 12 hits and eight runs while striking out four.
Matthew Forsey took the loss for Black Sox 18U. The pitcher went four and two-thirds innings, allowing 12 runs on 11 hits and striking out four.
Black Sox 18U collected 13 hits on the day. Forsey, Mousseau, Connor Bruzas, Pomeroy, and Perna all managed multiple hits for Black Sox 18U. Mousseau and Forsey all had three hits to lead Black Sox 18U.
Ishpeming tallied 11 hits in the game. Smith, Logan Hurkman, and Markham each racked up multiple hits for Ishpeming.
Black Sox 18U Defeated By Iron Mountain
Iron Mountain got things started in the first inning. Ben Kralovec grounded out, scoring one run.
Black Sox 18U knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the first inning, when Isaac Corenzoni’s wild pitch allowed one run to score for Black Sox 18U.
Iron Mountain pulled away for good with three runs in the second inning. In the second Evan Haferkorn’s sac fly scored one run for Iron Mountain and Henry Mcroberts singled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs.
Black Sox 18U scored three runs in the fourth inning. Black Sox 18U scored its runs on a fielder’s choice by Owen Daynard.
Corenzoni was the winning pitcher for Iron Mountain. The ace surrendered five runs on four hits over five innings, striking out 13.
Michael Hapanovich took the loss for Black Sox 18U. The southpaw went three and a third innings, allowing seven runs on six hits and striking out one.
Jayce Hill-Pine, Hapanovich, Wesley Pomeroy, and Cole Masse each collected one hit to lead Black Sox 18U.
Iron Mountain had eight hits in the game. Tony Kravolec and Haferkorn each had multiple hits for Iron Mountain. Iron Mountain tore up the base paths, as three players stole at least two bases. Nolan Amundson led the way with two.
