At the 2022 Soo Michigan Showcase hosted by Soo Michigan Woodducks, the Soo 18U Black Sox opened day one on July 8th with matchups against the Soo Michigan Woodducks and Ishpeming Blue Storm at Jesse James Field in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan.
Black Sox 18U stole the lead late and defeated Ishpeming 6-4 on Friday afternoon. The game was tied at three with Black Sox 18U batting in the top of the fourth when Michael Biocchi’s sac fly scored one run for Black Sox 18U.
Ishpeming fired up the offense in the first inning. Luke Koatriev drove in two when Koatriev singled.
After Black Sox 18U scored one run in the top of the fifth, Ishpeming answered with one of their own. Black Sox 18U scored when Michael Starzomski doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Ishpeming then answered when Gavin Dawson singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
Black Sox 18U took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Colin Sirois drew a walk, scoring one run.
Cole Masse pitched Black Sox 18U to victory. The righty allowed 11 hits and four runs over six innings, striking out nine and walking zero.
Ryan Maki took the loss for Ishpeming. The pitcher went five innings, allowing six runs on nine hits and striking out five.
Black Sox 18U racked up nine hits on the day. Masse, Sirois, Connor Bruzas, and Starzomski all managed multiple hits for Black Sox 18U. Starzomski, Bruzas, Sirois, and Masse each collected two hits to lead Black Sox 18U.
Ishpeming racked up 11 hits. Hunter Smith, Logan Hurkman, AJ Bottori, and Dawson each had multiple hits for Ishpeming. Smith led Ishpeming with three hits in three at bats. Ishpeming was sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Zac Beckham had the most chances in the field with six.
Early Lead For Soo Michigan Woodducks Seals Fate For Black Sox 18U1818
Game one, the 18Black Sox 18U watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 12-1 loss to Soo Michigan Woodducks on Friday. Soo Michigan Woodducks took the lead on a wild pitch in the first inning.
The Black Sox 18U struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Soo Michigan Woodducks, giving up 12 runs.
In the first inning, Soo Michigan Woodducks got their offense started when EJ Suggitt’s sac fly scored two runs for Soo Michigan Woodducks.
Soo Michigan Woodducks scored six runs in the second inning. Chambers, Matt Lumsden, Suggitt, and Bachand each had RBIs in the frame.
Hagen led the Soo Michigan Woodducks to victory on the pitcher’s mound. The bulldog allowed two hits and one run over five innings, striking out nine.
Connor Bruzas took the loss for Black Sox 18U. The righthander lasted one and one-third innings, allowing ten hits and nine runs while striking out one and walking one.
Nolan Toni and Cole Masse each collected one hit to lead Black Sox 18U.
