The FUN3 (U10) Ice Hawks from the Sault Ringette Club returned from the Whitby Ringette Association Annual Tournament sporting another gold medal for the season. This is their second tournament of the season and they entered the weekend undefeated. No victory comes easy, the hard work and determination of every player on this team is what brought them another victorious tournament.

The Ice Hawks started the tournament Friday, January 6th facing off against the Whitby Wild. The Wilds couldn’t keep up to the Ice Hawks speed and intensity and the 1st period found the Ice Hawks in the lead 6-0. The girls kept the pressure in the second finishing the game with a 9-1 victory.

Friday afternoon the Ice Hawks faced their first real competition against the Forest eXtreme. The game started out well for the Ice Hawks when they scored the first goal however by the end of the 1st period they found themselves down 4-2. The Forest eXtreme brought an intensity the Ice Hawks had not faced yet and unfortunately it resulted in the Ice Hawks first loss of the season with a final score 10-3 Forest.

Saturday morning for the Ice Hawks was a new day and the girls came in strong against the Oshawa Storm scoring the first goal only 28 seconds into the first period. The Ice Hawks finished the game with a shut-out final score of 10-0.

With two wins and a loss the Ice Hawks were in a three way tie for second in the round robin. It came down to the ninth tie breaker rule which is a data formula for all games played of (Goals for + Goals against) / (Goals against). They won the tie breaker by just one goal sending them to the finals for a rematch against the Forest eXtreme.

Sunday morning had the Ice Hawks looking for redemption. They came in strong, again scoring the 1st goal against Forest 58 seconds into the 1st period. The game was high intensity and the Ice Hawks never let up however by the end of the 1st period the Ice Hawks found themselves down again 4-2. The start of the second period wasn’t looking any better for the Ice Hawks when the eXtreme scored another goal early on. This had the Ice Hawks down by three points but they didn’t let that stop them. They worked hard as a team and continued to put pressure on the eXtreme scoring 2 goals in quick succession. The eXtreme were able to score one more goal in hopes of widening the gap again. The Ice Hawks responded again with 2 goals less than a minute apart. Both teams battled hard to try and get a winning goal before the end of the 2nd period. Neither team was letting up and the second period ended in a 6-6 tie. This brought the game to a sudden victory overtime period. The Ice Hawks took control early on with a few shots on net that were stopped by the eXtreme’s goalie. Just 1 minute and 22 seconds into overtime the Ice Hawks took position of the ring in a break away, the player deked the goalie, scoring the winning goal!
