Sault Ste Marie Netminder Metivier Leads the Cubs to West Division Semi Final with Series Win Over Thunderbirds

On the brink of elimination and coming off a 4 – 0 game five loss in Sudbury to the Sudbury Cubs on Thursday, March 28th and down 3 – 2 in the best of seven west division semi final series, the Soo Thunderbirds took to the ice in Sault Ste Marie at the John Rhodes Centre against the Cubs looking to even the series 3 – 3.

On a powerplay at 8:56 of the opening period to the left of the Thunderbird net, Hudson Chitaroni spins around the fire a backhand pass to Nolan Newton all alone in front of Thunderbird netminder Kolton Bourret’s crease to sink the Cubs first goal of the game to give Sudbury a 1 – 0 lead. Josh Kavanaugh drew the other helper on Newton’s fourth of the postseason. With the Soo serving a too many men penalty at 15:43 of the first, Marshall McCharles sends a cross ice pass to Kavanaugh to find the back of the Thunderbirds net on a Cubs powerplay over Bourret’s catcher to bring Sudbury’s lead to 2 – 0. Samuel Assinewai rifles a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle to find the back of the Thunderbirds net at 7:47 of the second with Hudson Chitaroni and Kavanaugh adding the assists on Assinewai’s fourth of the playoffs. With 9:26 remaining in the second, Nolan Newton catches a cross ice pass from Mason Chitaroni to lift the Cubs fourth past Bourret to give Sudbury a 4 – 0 shutout win. Cub goaltender Noah Metivier stopped 23 of 23 shots for his second straight shutout of the series while Thunderbird netminder Kolton Bourret turned away 32 of 36 shots in the Soo’s game six loss.

With the 4 – 2 west division semi final series win, the Cubs will meet the winner of game seven between the Blind River Beavers versus the Espanola Paper Kings that takes place on Sunday, March 31st with a 2:00 p.m afternoon matinee start.
