Sault College Cougars Earn First Win of 2024 with a Road Win Over Sheridan Bruins

The Sault College Cougars headed south to face the Sheridan College Cougars in a doubleheader on Saturday, September 21st in OCAA action.

In game one of the OCAA doubleheader, the Cougars opened the scoring in the first after Jayden Valle singled, scoring one run.

The Cougars added to their early lead in the top of the second inning after Bryce Blixit singled, Dylan Rudge walked, and Travis Rainey walked, each scoring one run.

Carter Gallivan earned the win for Sault College. The starting pitcher gave up two hits and one run (zero earned) over six innings, striking out five and walking two. Vishay Chandarana took the loss for the Bruins. The hurler went four and two-thirds innings, surrendering zero runs on five hits, striking out four and walking one. Matt Bardoel opened the game for Sheridan College. The hurler gave up five hits and four runs over two and one-third innings, striking out four and walking four. Cole Masse collected the save.

Sault College amassed 10 hits in the game. Aiden Russel, the Cougars’s number seven hitter, led the team with three hits in three at-bats. Blixit, Valle, Rainey, and Rudge each drove in one run for Sault College. Sault College ran wild on the base paths, piling up three stolen bases for the game.

Tyler Barbier went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Bruins in hits. Sheridan College didn’t commit a single error in the field. J. Berney had the most chances in the field with 10.

In game two in the doubleheader on Saturday, the Cougars stayed in it until the end, but the Bruins pulled away late in a 4-3 victory. The game was tied at three in the bottom of the fourth when a steal of home scored one run.

Sheridan College were the first to get on the board in the first when Luke Ciavoliello doubled, scoring two runs.

Sault College tied the game in the top of the second thanks to a sacrifice fly by Cole Masse, and an error.

A ground out by Masse gave the Cougars the lead, 3-2, in the top of the fourth.

The Bruins took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after D. Langlois singled, and Tyler Scovell stole home, each scoring one run.

Caymo Ghannie earned the win for Sheridan College. The pitcher gave up four hits and three runs (two earned) over seven innings, striking out three and walking three. Owen Daynard took the loss for the Cougars. The pitcher went three and two-thirds innings, surrendering four runs (two earned) on four hits, striking out one and walking three.

Masse led Sault College with two runs batted in. Aiden Russel, Jayden Valle, Dylan Rudge, and Michael Starzomski each collected one hit for the Cougars. Sault College turned two double plays in the game.

Ciavoliello provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Sheridan College with two runs batted in. The catcher went 1-for-3 on the day. Ciavoliello, Tyler Barbier, Langlois, J. Berney, and Scovell each collected one hit for the Bruins. Barbier stole two bases. Sheridan College ran wild on the base paths, collecting four stolen bases for the game.

Next up for the Cougars will be a doubleheader on Sunday, September 22nd when they face the Humber Hawks with opening pitches of 1:00 p.m and 5:15 p.m.
