Looking to put an end to a difficult start to the 2026 Ontario Summer Football League (OSFL) ‘AAA’ season, the Soo U18 Sabercats hit the road on Saturday, June 6, for a late-afternoon matchup against the Kingston Grenadiers at Richardson Memorial Stadium.
The Sabercats entered the contest following a 47-1 loss at home to the Burlington Stampeders on May 30, marking their third consecutive defeat to begin the season. Meanwhile, the Grenadiers came into the game with momentum after posting an impressive 28-0 shutout victory over the Durham Dolphins on May 30.
Facing a lengthy bus trip east to Kingston, the Sabercats hoped to turn their fortunes around against a Grenadiers squad looking to build upon its recent success.
Kingston controlled much of the contest from the opening kickoff, using a balanced offensive attack and strong defensive play to keep the Sabercats on their heels throughout the afternoon. Despite the Sabercats battling hard and managing to put points on the board, the Grenadiers proved too much to handle as they earned a 47-10 victory on their home field.
The loss drops the Sabercats to 0-4 on the season and places them seventh in the OSFL AAA standings. While the results have not gone their way through the opening month of the campaign, the young Sabercats continue to gain valuable experience against some of the province’s top programs.
With four games now in the books, the focus shifts back to Sault Ste. Marie where the Sabercats will look to regroup and prepare for another tough challenge.
The Sabercats return home on Saturday, June 13, when they host the Cornwall Wildcats at Rocky DiPietro Field. Cornwall enters the week with a 2-2 record and currently sits fourth in the AAA standings.
Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m, and fans unable to attend can catch all the action live on Saultsports TV as the Sabercats continue their pursuit of their first victory of the 2026 season.
