The Sault Sabercats battled until the final whistle but suffered one of their toughest losses of the 2026 OSFL U18 ‘AAA’ season on Saturday, June 27th, dropping a dramatic 37-31 decision to the Durham Dolphins at Superior Heights Field in Sault Ste. Marie.
The Sabercats (0-6) came out with energy against the visiting Dolphins (3-3), opening the scoring just over six minutes into the first quarter when Durham conceded a safety, giving Sault an early 2-0 advantage.
The home side extended its lead at the 2:29 mark of the opening quarter as running back Payton Melchiorre powered through the Durham defensive front for the game’s first touchdown. AJ Coccimiglio added the convert to give the Sabercats a commanding 9-0 lead.
Durham responded later in the quarter when quarterback Mason Hayhoe connected with Micah Coote on a three-yard touchdown pass. Yabu Montalvo’s successful conversion cut the Sabercats’ lead to 9-7 heading into the second quarter.
Melchiorre continued his outstanding afternoon at the 4:42 mark of the second quarter, breaking loose on a 28-yard touchdown run. Coccimiglio’s extra point restored Sault’s nine-point cushion at 16-7.
The Dolphins answered once again before halftime. Hayhoe delivered a 35-yard strike to Dante Booth, who raced 55 yards to the end zone. Montalvo added the convert to trim the deficit to 16-14 at the break.
Durham grabbed its first lead of the afternoon early in the third quarter. At the 6:02 mark, Hayhoe found Booth again, this time on a 12-yard pass before Booth turned it into a 21-yard touchdown. The successful conversion gave the Dolphins a 20-16 advantage.
The Sabercats responded quickly. Quarterback Alex Hayes connected with Melchiorre on a short four-yard pass before the talented back broke free for a 44-yard touchdown. Coccimiglio’s convert pushed Sault back in front 23-20 with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter.
The back-and-forth battle continued into the fourth quarter. Just 61 seconds into the final frame, Montalvo booted a 22-yard field goal to even the contest at 23-23.
Durham regained the lead midway through the quarter, scoring a touchdown before Montalvo’s conversion made it 30-23.
The Sabercats refused to quit.
With just 2:34 remaining, Hayes found Greyson Avery on a 20-yard touchdown pass in the Dolphins’ end zone. Rather than settle for the extra point, the Sabercats elected to go for two. Melchiorre converted the attempt, giving Sault a thrilling 31-30 lead late in the game.
The drama was far from over.
With only 1.9 seconds remaining, Durham lined up for what appeared to be a game-winning 17-yard field goal attempt. The kick missed the uprights, and the Sabercats initially took possession at their own 38-yard line. However, on the ensuing play, Montalvo intercepted a Hayes pass and returned it 35 yards for the game-winning touchdown as time expired, completing an incredible sequence that lifted the Dolphins to a heartbreaking 37-31 victory.
Despite the loss, Melchiorre delivered one of his strongest performances of the season, accounting for three touchdowns while leading the Sabercats offensively in a game that featured multiple lead changes and momentum swings.
