At the John Rhodes Centre, the Superior Heights Steelhawks opened the 2022 – 2023 Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League season when they took to the ice to face the Korah Colts on Wednesday, November 2nd.
At 9:59 of the opening period with Korah’s Mason Battochio and Dylan Garson on a two on one for the Colts, Battachio fires a snapshot from the left faceoff circle to find the back of Steelhawk netminder Tyler Greco’s net under the blocker to give Korah a 1 – 0 lead. Nine seconds later Ray Rumiel cuts across the Korah blueline to fire the tying goal under Colt goaltender Kris Walker’s blocker for an unassisted goal to even the game 1 – 1 for Superior Heights at the 9:50 mark of first. With the puck sitting alone in the Steelhawk crease, Korah’s Kaylob Thibodeau pushes the go-ahead goal across the goal line to give the Colts a 2 – 1 lead. Rowan Provenzano and Ashton Sawcyhn drew the helpers on Thibodeau’s goal at 6:56 of the second period. Ray Rumiel fires a snapshot from the left blueline through Walker’s five hole on a Steelhawk powerplay to sink his second of the contest to tie the game 2 – 2 at 6:56 of the second with Clark Parker and Owen Case notching the contributors on Rumiel’s powerplay goal.
With a scramble in front of Walker’s net, Michael Wiese slides Superior Heights third underneath the Korah goaltender at 3:23 of the second to give the Steelhawks a 3 – 2 lead with Ethan Wooton and Connor Ouimette drawing the assists on Wiese’s go-ahead goal. With a scrum in front of Greco’s net, Battochio finds the back of the Steelhawk net for his second of the game to pull the Colts even 3 – 3 at 4:11 of the third. Luca Vinieri had the lone helper on Battochio’s tying goal. With only 0.06 seconds remaining in regulation and all alone in front of Korah’s net, Tristian Gioia finds Kris Walker net empty on the right side of the Colt goaltender’s net to give the Steelhawks their first win of the season. Dylan Murphy and Clark Parker added the contributors on Gioia’s game winning goal.
Steelhawk coach Chris Hales told Saultsports that “you couldn’t have asked for a more exciting game to kick off the high school season. Both teams played and competed hard. On our side, there was a lot to like. We battled through some adversity, going down twice. Structurally there is some stuff to clean up. But most importantly the players stayed, bought in and found a way to get the win.”
“Great competitive game for the opener. Some good things took place and some things to address. Our team needs time to be together and get used to each other’s play. It’s a process,” added Korah coach Chris Perri.
