NOJHL West Drops to 0-3 at the 2023 Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge in Trenton

Getting two goals apiece in each period helped CCHL Yzerman double up NOJHL West 4-2 Tuesday, November 14th in Eastern Canada Cup action Duncan McDonald Memorial Community Gardens.

A disputed first goal for CCHL Yzerman was counted despite appearing to have gone in underneath the side of the net, instead of across the goal line, on a marker that was credited to Brayden Bowen 2:50 into the contest against a surprised West starter Kolton Bourret (Soo Thunderbirds).

The Central Canada Hockey League Yzerman Division reps then made it 2-0 at 11:15, thanks to Cristobal Tola as he ripped a shot by Bourret from left circle.

Answering for the West before the intermission, Owen Fergusson (Espanola Paper Kings) scooped up a rebound off a Candon O’Neill (Soo Thunderbirds) attempt from the blueline and reached around before tucking a backhand past a sprawled Jaedon Nelson in the CCHL crease.

Restoring their two-tally cushion early in the final frame, Ethan Montroy took a feed from the side boards and proceeded to wire into the right corner.

Pulling to within one with a shorthanded effort at 18:56, Jesse Dupuis (Blind River Beavers) had two cracks from the right of the net before banging in the rebound off an Andrey Manov (Blind River Beavers) point blast.

However, CCHL Yzerman’s Devon Savignac secured the victory by scoring on the power play, into an empty net, off a three-man break in the final minute to wrap things up.

Player of the game recognition went to Bourret and Montroy.

NOJHL West will wrap-up play in Trenton on Wednesday, November 15th against Maritime Hockey League North at 10:40 a.m..
