The Algoma OUA Thunderbirds are excited to welcome back a familiar face as our Women’s Basketball Head Coach!
Katie Hamilton, who recently coached the Nipissing Lakers Women’s Basketball team for five seasons, will be leading our team in the upcoming season.
“I consider myself extremely blessed to be leading a university program in my hometown. Myself and my family have been a part of the Thunderbirds program since its infancy and it is something that means a great deal to me on a personal level. I am excited to get started and looking forward to reconnecting with the campus, the Alumni and the Soo community as a whole. This is a passion project for me and I’m so happy to be back,” states Hamilton.
Starting from a young age, Katie had great success as a youth player, winning City and NOSSA Championships with her team at St. Basil’s Secondary School and continuing to play at the University of PEI.
A graduate of UPEI (BA, 07), she was able to then expand professionally in roles such as the Basketball PEI Executive/Technical Director and the Multiple Sport Executive Director with Sport PEI.
As previously stated, Hamilton coached the Women’s Basketball team at Nipissing for five seasons. Her coaching experience extends far beyond that, as she was also the Head Coach of the Sault College Women’s Basketball team for three seasons. Katie has also acted as an assistant coach for the UPEI (three seasons) and Holland College (two seasons) women’s teams. She has also assisted Team Ontario’s U15 and U17 teams and led the PEI 17 girls team.
We would like to recognize Katie’s accomplishments, including the Ontario Basketball Elite Female Coach of the Year, Ontario Basketball Canadian Sport for Life Ambassador of the Year, U15 Girls Canadian National Champion, and CCAA Girls national Silver Medalist.
“We are excited to have Katie join our team and the leadership that she will bring to our Women’s Basketball program,” explains Dave Trudelle, Director of Student Life & Ancillary Services. “Her experience will help our student-athletes continue to develop and compete at a high level. We look forward to seeing the positive impact that Katie will have on our program moving forward.”
We are very excited to see how Katie’s experience, knowledge and passion for basketball lead the team in the upcoming season!
