After opening their weekend set with a 3–0 shutout victory on Saturday, January 24th in Sault Ste. Marie, the Soo Greyhounds returned to the ice on Sunday afternoon for a matinee matchup against the North Bay Battalion at the Memorial Gardens in OHL regular season action. Backed by strong special teams and steady goaltending, the Greyhounds completed the weekend sweep with a decisive 6–1 win.
The opening period was tightly contested, with both teams trading chances but unable to break through. The score remained deadlocked at 0–0 after 20 minutes.
Soo found its offense early in the second period. At 5:28, Noah Laus opened the scoring with his ninth goal of the season, finishing a play set up by Carson Andrew. The Greyhounds extended their lead on the powerplay at 15:09, as Chase Reid buried his 17th of the year with assists from Marco Mignosa and Lukas Fischer.
North Bay responded late in the frame with a powerplay goal from Lirim Amidovski at 18:15, cutting the deficit to 2–1. The Greyhounds answered quickly, restoring their two-goal cushion just 32 seconds later when Quinn McKenzie scored on the powerplay at 18:47, assisted by Marco Mignosa and Christopher Brown, sending Soo into the intermission up 3–1.
The Greyhounds continued to pour it on in the third period. Quinn McKenzie struck again on the powerplay just 1:46 into the frame, notching his 18th of the season with helpers from Mignosa and Brown. At 7:54, Travis Hayes added to the lead, scoring his 11th of the campaign off a setup from Spencer Evans.
Soo capped off the scoring at 11:25 with another powerplay marker, as Chase Reid collected his second goal of the game and 18th of the season, assisted by Christopher Brown and Lukas Fischer.
In goal, Landon Miller delivered a strong performance for the Greyhounds, stopping 31 of 32 shots. At the other end, Cole Vreugdenhil made 25 saves on 31 shots for the Battalion.
With the win, the Greyhounds wrapped up a perfect weekend at home and now turn their attention to a three-game road trip. Soo opens the trip on Thursday, January 29th in St. Catharines against the Niagara IceDogs, before traveling to Pennsylvania to face the Erie Otters on Friday, January 30th. The road swing concludes with an afternoon matinee in Brantford against the Bulldogs.
