After dropping two straight road contests in St Catharines, Ontario and Erie, Pennsylvania on January 30th and 31st, the Soo Greyhounds wrapped up their road swing by opening the month of February in Brantford, taking on the Bulldogs in OHL action on February 1st in a tightly contested matchup that was ultimately decided in a shootout.
Brantford opened the scoring early in the first period on the power play when Adam Benak continued his strong season, netting his 22nd goal at 3:21 off a setup from Caleb Malhotra to give the Bulldogs a 1–0 lead. The Greyhounds responded midway through the frame as Jeremy Martin tied the game at 11:43, scoring his 18th of the season with assists from Marco Mignosa and Jordan Charron.
The second period was a goaltending duel, with both Carter George for Soo and Ryerson Leenders for Brantford standing tall to keep the game deadlocked at 1–1 heading into the third.
Brantford regained the lead at 9:00 of the final period when Charlie Paquette buried his 24th goal of the season, assisted by Vladimir Dravecky, putting the Bulldogs back in front 2–1. The Greyhounds once again showed resilience, answering just under three minutes later as Lukas Fischer found the back of the net for his fifth of the season at 11:52, finishing a play set up by Colin Fitzgerald and Brady Smith to tie the game at 2–2.
With overtime failing to produce a winner, the game moved to a shootout where Adam Benak proved to be the difference, scoring the lone goal to lift Brantford to the victory.
In goal, Carter George delivered a strong performance for the Greyhounds, stopping 37 of 39 shots, while Ryerson Leenders turned aside 27 of 29 shots for the Bulldogs in the win.
The Greyhounds will now return to Sault Ste. Marie before heading back on the road for their next challenge, a Wednesday night matchup against the Saginaw Spirit on February 4th with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 p.m as they look to get back into the win column.
