In their first game of the 2022 NOJHL Showcase in Sudbury, Ontario, the sixth place (3-5) west division Soo Thunderbirds took to the ice to face the third place (5-2-0-1) Timmins Rock on Tuesday, October 4th at Countryside Arena.
Youseff Chaouachi picks up a bouncing puck in front of Rock goaltender Jacob Brown to find the back of Timmin’s net under Brown’s catcher at 11:22 of the opening period to give the Soo a 1 – 0 lead. Dharan Cap drew the lone helper on Chaouachi’s second of the season. With a scramble in front of Brown’s net 17:35 into the first, Anton Petrovskiy scores his second of the season with sliding the Thunderbirds second goal of the contest under the Rock goaltender unassisted. 2:30 into the second period and on a power play, Keyon Nyman fires a snapshot on Thunderbird netminder Landon Miller to be picked by Timmins’ Nicholas Frederick with a rebound to pull the Rock within one under the Soo Greyhound netminder prospect’s left pad. With Brady Harround all alone between the faceoff circles in front of Miller’s net, Harroun fires the tying goal on a Timmins’ five on three power play 95 seconds into the third under the Thunderbird netminder blocker to even the game 2 – 2. Frederick earned the contributor on Harroun’s tying goal. 34 seconds into a three on three overtime with a toe drag around two Rock players skating down the left side of Brown’s net, Greyhound prospect Brodie McConnell Barker sank his first NOJHL career goal past the Timmins’ goaltender to give the Soo a 3 – 2 win over the Rock. Timmin goaltender Jacob Brown stopped 24 of 27 shots in the overtime loss while Landon Miller earned his first win in a Thunderbird jersey with turning away 33 of 35 shots in the 3 – 2 showcase win.
The Thunderbirds are back in action after their # win/loss of the season at 1:00 p.m at the 2022 NOJHL Showcase when they meet the first place (6-3) east division Hearst Lumberjacks on Wednesday, October 5th. In their first two meeting against the Lumberjacks, the Thunderbirds were outscored 13 – 5 in the two losses in Hearst on September 22 and 23.
