Coming a 4 – 3 overtime win on Saturday, October 30th over the North Bay U18 Trappers, the Soo U18 Greyhounds returned to action for a 11:00 a.m puck drop on Sunday, October 31st to face the U18 Trappers in Great North Midget League action.
At 8:15 of the opening period, Thomas Sefton fires a wrist shot from in front of Greyhound netminder Terry See’s net through traffic to give the Trappers a 1 – 0 lead. Justin Rousseau had the lone helper on Sefton’s goal. Defenseman Sam Verbonac sinks the Greyhounds tying goal from the centre of the blueline along the ice to find North Bay goaltender’s five hole to even the game 1 – 1. Austin Fellinger and Lincoln Moore drew the assists on the Greyhound captains tying goal at 4:22. On a Soo powerplay from just inside the North Bay blueline, Camine Perna drop paases the puck to forward Gabe Zimbaro for the go-ahead goal through the five hole to give the Soo a 2 – 1 lead. With a scrum in front of See’s net, Nolan Masson slides the Trappers tying goal under the Greyhound netminder at 1:21 of the first to tie the game 2 – 2 for North Bay. Rousseau and Carson Laronde notched the contributors on Masson’s tying goal. With time ticking on the clock and 45 seconds remaining the first, Jacob Smith picks up an unsuccessful Trapper clearing attempt in front of North Bay’s net to sinks the Soo’s third of the game and give the Greyhounds the lead back heading into the first intermission. Adrian O’Dell registered the assist on Smith’s powerplay goal.
With a from behind the North Bay net from Lincoln Moore, Palumbo scores 1:33 into the second stanza with a wrist shot over Trapper goaltender catcher to bring the lead to 4 – 2. Nine seconds later, North Bay’s William Tysick closes the gap to one sliding the Trappers’ third under See left the left side of the Soo’s net at the 18:18 mark of the period. Alex Bubuc added the lone helper on Tysick’s goal. At 13:32 of the priod, Gabe Palumbo out skates the North Bay defense up the left side of the ice to sink the Greyhounds fifth under Trapper goaltender left pad to give the hosts a 5 – 3 lead. Dell contributed on Palumbo’s goal. With 44 seconds left in the period, Riley Wolfe sends the visitors into the second intermission down by only one after firing the Trappers fourth from the right faceoff circle. Rousseau had the helper on Wolfe’s goal. With his second of the game at 16:39 of the third, Masson ties the game 5 – 5 from in front of See’s net with Rousseau setting up North Bay’s fifth of the contest. Greyhound forward Connor Chow – Lynn gives the Soo back a one goal lead 3:29 into the final period with O’Dell and Fellinger registering the assists from just inside the blueline to bring the score to 6 – 5. Callum McAuley scores the Soo’s seventh from the right faceoff circle under North Bay goaltender at 4:46 of the period. Alex Dubuc closes the gap to one with 65 seconds remaining in Sunday’s contest through traffic from the left side of See’s net, Masson notched the contributor on Dubuc’s goal. With time ticking down and 16 seconds left in the game Cole Cond finds a Trapper empty net with goaltender on the North Bay bench for an extra attacker to give the Soo a 8 – 6 win over the Trappers in Sault Ste Marie. McAuley registered the assist on Cond’s empty net goal.
Coach Jamie Henderson told Saultsports that “today was one of those games we did just enough to pull out the two points but ultimately we know we need to clean up a lot of areas going forward. We did some great things offensively all weekend but we need to get that same commitment to executing our structure in all three zones. Hopefully we can have a couple good practices before Thursday and have a good showing in Sudbury.
The Soo U18 Greyhounds will now head to Sudbury for the Sudbury Big Nickel Tournament from November 4th to November 7th.
