Coming off a 5 – 4 loss to the sixth place Elliot Lake Vikings on Tuesday, October 24th in Sault Ste Marie, the third place west division (11-4-2-1) Soo Thunderbirds took to the ice at the John Rhodes Centre on Saturday, October 28th to host the second place east division (10-6-1) Timmins Rock in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.
From in front of the Thunderbird netminder Kolton Bourret, Mason Svarich gives the Rock a 1 – 0 lead at 12:45 of the opening period. Harry Clark drew the assist on Svarich’s nineth of the season. With a scrum in front of Rock goaltender Patrick Boivin’s net, Sam Lake lifts the Soo’s tying goal over the Timmins goaltender’s catcher to even the game 1 – 1 at the 16:29 mark of the first. Jackson Truchan and Jacob Smith notched the helpers on Lake’s fifth of the season. From the left faceoff circle, Jackson Truchan gives the Soo a 2 – 1 lead at 9:34 of the second with a wrist shot between Boivin’s left post and shoulder. Jame Legler and Jacob Smith added contributors on Truchan’s 12th of the season. Harry Clark slides the Rock’s tying goal under Bourret’s blocker at 9:41 to even the game 2 – 2 for Timmins. Chase Longhurst-McIntyre and Felix Cadieux-Fredette registered the assists on Clark’s sixth of the season. At 14:15 of the middle stanza, Callum McAuley catches a cross ice pass from Truchan in the right faceoff circle to give the Thunderbirds a 3 – 2 lead. Kaden Dundas had the other helper on McAuley’s powerplay goal.
With their third powerplay marker of the game at 8:42, James Legler fired a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle over Boivin’s left shoulder to increase the Soo’s lead to 4 – 2. Veteran defenseman Kolby Fellinger had the assist on Legler’s fourth of the season. Mason Svarich rifles a snapshot from the right faceoff circle over Kourett’s right shoulder unassisted at 19:31 to close the gap to one for the Rock. On a powwerplay with 1.1 seconds remaining in the period, Harry Clark sinks his second of the contest unassisted after splitting the Thunderbird defense to send the Rock into the second intermission even at 4 – 4. With forty seconds remaining in the three on three overtime, Thunderbird captain Kolby Fellinger sinks his first of the season through a scrum in front of the Rock’s net to give the Soo a 5 – 4 overtime win over the visiting Rock. Truchan drew the lone helper on Fellinger game winner. Timmins goaltender Patrick Boivin stopped 31 of 36 shots in the loss while Thunderbird netminder Kolton Bourret turned away 23 of 27 shots in the Soo’s win.

The Thunderbirds next game will be November 4th when they host their cross border rivals, the Soo Eagles in a 7:00 p.m puck drop at the John Rhodes Centre.
