Coming off a tough 37-16 loss in Hamilton on August 9th, the (1-1) Sault College Cougars hit the road to Belleville on Saturday, August 16th for a matchup against the (0-1) Quinte Skyhawks in Ontario Football Conference action.
Determined to rebound, the Cougars controlled the game from the opening kickoff and never looked back. When the final buzzer sounded at Loyalist College, the Cougars walked away with an emphatic 43-0 shutout victory—marking their second win of their inaugural Canadian Junior Football League season.
Cougars coach Paul Orazietti told Saultsports that “it was a nice bounce back win after a lackluster performance last week in Hamilton. It came at a big price however, with our starting quarterback Lex McGarity suffering a lower body injury on quarterback scramble in the first quarter. We are fortunate in that we have two other very good quarterbacks in Grayson Weber and Matti Tucker both who saw time in the remaining three quarters but Lex is a pretty hard guy to replace. Our guys came to play today and I was proud of the effort.”
With a record of 2-1, the Cougars now shift their focus to a historic moment: their first-ever home game in program history. On Saturday, August 23rd, they will host the (1-1) Hamilton Hurricanes at Rocky DiPietro Field, with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m. The matchup not only gives the Cougars a chance to avenge their week two loss but also provides fans in the Sault with the opportunity to witness history as the team makes its home debut.
“We have also now posted ten out of twelve quarters this season with no points allowed on defence which bodes well for our chances as we begin to face tougher teams in our schedule. We need to clean up our penalty and discipline situation in order to take the next step but I like the direction we are going,” said Orazietti.
