The Algoma Thunderbirds men’s soccer program is ready to kick off its 2025 OUA campaign with back-to-back home matches on Saturday, August 30th, and Sunday, August 31st. Both games are set for 3:15 p.m. at Superior Heights in Sault Ste. Marie, where the Thunderbirds will welcome the Brock Badgers for the opening weekend of action.
This season brings a mix of fresh talent and veteran leadership to the Thunderbirds lineup. Among the newcomers is Scottish-born Canadian striker Brett Findlay, a towering 6’5 forward whose hold-up play and mobility make him a dangerous option in the final third. Coaches are also eager to see his impact on set pieces, where his size and presence are expected to cause problems for opposing defenses. Another exciting addition is Alessandro Cenedese from British Columbia, who previously played with the Tigers. Known for his composure, strong technical skills, and sharp football IQ, he is expected to bring control and creativity to the midfield.
Thunderbird coach Dave Andreychuk told Saultsports that “I think a big thing for us to start the season is starting off on the front foot and trying to take games to the other teams. We have always had this mindset that we are the underdogs and we have to play it a little bit more safely. I think we are starting to see a shift in attitude and wanting to be the squad that teams have to come and defend against for the majority of the game. It will take a lot of work, but I think this is the group that you will start to see that shift in mentality.”
The Thunderbirds will also lean on a core group of experienced veterans to guide the squad. Returning captain Jaden Timmis, along with Lucas Spirkoski and Ethan Mendes de Franca, headline a group of seasoned players who know the pace and demands of OUA competition. Their leadership and familiarity with the league will be key in helping the younger players adjust quickly.
This year’s squad boasts not only added height but also valuable experience, giving the Thunderbirds new options in attack and stability across the pitch. Supporters can expect a team committed to moving the ball with purpose while continuing to shape its identity and style of play in the OUA.
“I think what you will experience this year with our program is a team that is hungry, a bit more experienced, humble, and ready to control the outcomes a lot better than our two previous seasons together. There’s a togetherness about this group that just feels different than our past years. We’ve always had camaraderie and good team spirit amongst our program since I have arrived; However, this year just feels that little bit different and special with our group.”
With a blend of promising recruits and reliable veterans, the Thunderbirds are eager to make their mark as they open the 2025 season in front of their home fans.
August 30th and 31st will also see the Thunderbird women host the Badgers at 1:00 p.m both days at Superior Heights to open their 2025 OUA women’s soccer season.
