After opening the 2022 OUA soccer season 0-2 for the women and men’s soccer programs for the Algoma Thunderbirds, the Sault Ste Marie OUA soccer programs took to the road to face the Western Mustangs in back to back contest in London, Ontario over the Saturday, September 17 and 18 weekend.
On Saturday, the men and women fell to the Mustangs with the men losing 10 – 0 while the women were handed a 7 – 0 loss by the Mustangs. On Sunday, Leigha Nippard scored at the 85:23 mark of the women’s game in the Thunderbirds 6 – 1 loss while the men headed home with a 4 – 0 loss to Western.
“It was a tough weekend against a good Western program. We showed in patches that we can compete. We really need to get some consistency in our performances for the coming weekend,” added women’s coach Neil Ovey.
Men’s coach sam Medaglia told Saultsports that “This weekend proved to me that they could bounce back after a loss. The team played a much more complete game for the whole ninety minutes. Even though we lost 4-0 to a very tough Western squad, the boys stuck to their game plan throughout the entire game. It was truly a great team effort. A few calls that didn’t go our way where this put us behind, as a coaching staff we were happy our guys didn’t give up. Awesome effort gentlemen!”
The Thunderbirds will be back in action with the soccer programs hosting the Wilfrid Laurier Gold Hawks on Friday, September 23 with game times of 12:00 p.m (women) and 2:00 p.m (men) while the Windsor Lancers come into Sault Ste Marie on September 25 for contests at 12:00 p.m (women) and 2:00 p.m (men) at Superior Heights.
