The Algoma University Thunderbirds travelled to southern Ontario on Saturday, September 26, for a pair of OUA soccer matchups against the Brock Badgers, with both the women’s and men’s teams taking on Brock in St. Catharines, Ontario.
The Brock women’s team scored three first-half goals to earn a 3-0 victory over Algoma, while the Brock men added three goals of their own to defeat the Thunderbirds 3-0.
Women’s Soccer
The Brock Badgers opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Jenna Parris found the back of the net on an unassisted play to give Brock an early 1-0 lead.
Just under four minutes later, Parris struck again. Her second goal of the afternoon came at 16:50, with Avery Cafaro picking up the assist as Brock extended its advantage to 2-0.
Parris completed the hat trick before halftime, scoring at 43:58 off an assist from Julia Martins. The three-goal performance gave Brock a 3-0 lead heading into the break.
Algoma was limited to one recorded shot on the afternoon, with Taya Shackleton registering the Thunderbirds’ lone attempt.
Brock finished with four shots, with Parris accounting for three of them and converting on all three. Zoe Thorsen-Cavers recorded Brock’s other shot.
In goal, Algoma’s Paisley Pennington faced four shots and finished with three goals against, while Brock goalkeeper Madison Heeley made one save on Algoma’s lone shot.
The three goals from Parris proved to be the difference as Brock secured the 3-0 OUA victory.
Men’s Soccer
The Algoma men’s team followed the women’s matchup against Brock, with the Thunderbirds also looking to earn a result against the Badgers.
Brock opened the scoring at 16:44 when Tiago Pereira scored an unassisted goal to put the Badgers ahead 1-0.
The home side doubled its lead late in the opening half. Conrad Czarnecki scored at 36:57 on an unassisted play, sending Brock into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
Brock added another goal early in the second half when Michael Pais converted at 55:24, with Luca Danesi recording the assist. The goal gave the Badgers a 3-0 lead.
Algoma generated three shots during the match, with Calen Doobay, Elliot Swenarchuk and Vic Driessen each recording one attempt.
Brock recorded six shots, with Pereira finishing with two shots and one goal. Czarnecki, Danesi, Damon Gordon and Pais each recorded one shot, with Czarnecki and Pais also finding the scoresheet.
Algoma goalkeeper Josh Bondac made three saves on six Brock shots, while Brock’s Nikola Neskovic stopped all three Algoma attempts to record the clean sheet.
The final whistle confirmed a 3-0 Brock victory, giving the Badgers wins in both OUA soccer matchups against Algoma on Saturday.
Thunderbirds Return to Action October 9
Following the road trip to St. Catharines, both Algoma soccer programs will return to the road in October.
The Thunderbirds women’s and men’s teams are scheduled to face the Windsor Lancers on October 9 in their next OUA soccer matchups.
