A Weekend in Petoskey for Soo U18 Black Sox

Over the Friday, July 14th to Saturday, July 15th weekend, the Soo U18 Black Sox headed south of the border to participate in the 2023 Petoskey Tournament in Petoskey, Michigan.

The Black Sox headed into game four of the weekend 1 – 2 record when they hit the diamond to face the Farmington Hills Mudhens. The Soo Black Sox 18U’s effort to come back from down four runs in the fourth inning came up just short, as they fell 6-5 to Farmington Hills Mudhens on Saturday. Soo Black Sox 18U closed the gap by scoring on a single and a single.

Soo Black Sox 18U lost despite out-hitting Farmington Hills Mudhens seven to six. Kolton Tremblay led Soo Black Sox 18U with two hits.

Soo Black Sox 18U got on the board in the first inning after an error scored one run.

Cam singled on an 0-2 count, which helped Farmington Hills Mudhens tie the game at one in the bottom of the second.

A double by Michael Starzomski gave Soo Black Sox 18U the lead, 2-1, in the top of the third.

A single by Griffin gave Farmington Hills Mudhens the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the third.

Derek earned the win for Farmington Hills Mudhens. They allowed seven hits and five runs (four earned) over five innings, striking out four and walking two. Tremblay took the loss for Soo Black Sox 18U. They went three innings, allowing six runs on six hits, striking out one and walking four.

Caleb Walker went 1-for-1 at the plate as the left-handed hitter led the team with two runs batted in. Tremblay stole two bases. Soo Black Sox 18U turned one double play in the game.

Griffin and Cam each collected two hits for Farmington Hills Mudhens. Griffin and Albert each drove in two runs for Farmington Hills Mudhens. Farmington Hills Mudhens turned one double play in the game.

Game Three (Soo Black Sox vs Berryhill Post 165)
Soo Black Sox 18U couldn’t keep up with Berryhill Post 165 and fell 14-0 on Saturday.

A double by Nathan Masar put Berryhill Post 165 on the board in the top of the second.

Berryhill Post 165 added to their early lead in the top of the third inning after Aidan Robinson doubled, and Braylen Laverty singled, each scoring one run.

Berryhill Post 165 scored five runs on five hits in the top of the fourth inning. Masar singled, scoring two runs, Brady Rogers singled, scoring one run, Zack Parker drew a walk, scoring one run, and Laverty singled, scoring one run.

Berryhill Post 165 scored six runs on six hits in the top of the fifth inning. Mitchell Walters grounded out, scoring one run, an error scored one run, Brett Faccio singled, scoring two runs, Robinson doubled, scoring one run, and Brody Krzysiak doubled, scoring one run.

Lane Kloha earned the win for Berryhill Post 165. The right-handed pitcher gave up one hit and zero runs over two-thirds of an inning, striking out one and walking one. Connor Bruzas took the loss for Soo Black Sox 18U. They went three innings, surrendering three runs (one earned) on five hits, striking out none and walking none.

Bruzas and Carter Young each collected one hit for Soo Black Sox 18U.

Berryhill Post 165 accumulated 16 hits in the game. Ryan Louch and Laverty each collected three hits for Berryhill Post 165. Masar led Berryhill Post 165 with four runs batted in from the number eight spot in the lineup. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Robinson and Rogers each collected multiple hits for Berryhill Post 165. Berryhill Post 165 didn’t commit a single error in the field. Masar had the most chances in the field with eight.

Game Two (Soo Black Sox vs Big Rapids Lumberjacks)
Soo Black Sox 18U easily dispatched Big Rapids Lumberjacks on Saturday, 13-1.

Soo Black Sox 18U got on the board in the top of the first inning after Kolton Tremblay singled, scoring one run, a steal of home scored one run, Carmine Perna doubled, scoring two runs, and Cole Masse singled, scoring one run.

Soo Black Sox 18U added two runs in the second after Keyton Mousseau singled.

Soo Black Sox 18U scored six runs on six hits in the top of the fourth inning. Mousseau singled, scoring one run, Perna singled, scoring two runs, Masse singled, scoring one run, Lucas Carriere singled, scoring one run, and Michael Hapanovich singled, scoring one run.

Nolan Toni earned the win for Soo Black Sox 18U. The right-handed pitcher allowed six hits and one run over four innings, striking out five and walking two. McNeilly took the loss for Big Rapids Lumberjacks. They went three and one-third innings, giving up 10 runs (six earned) on eight hits, striking out four and walking three.

Soo Black Sox 18U piled up 12 hits in the game. Masse, Mousseau, and Perna each collected two hits for Soo Black Sox 18U. Mousseau and Perna each drove in three runs for Soo Black Sox 18U. Petoskey Royals 18U defeated Soo Black Sox 18U 15-0 on Friday thanks in part to nine runs in the first inning.

Petoskey Royals 18U got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Garrett Williams singled, scoring two runs, T Dohm hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, Kameron Horn singled, scoring one run, Tyler Goedel doubled, scoring one run, Luke Lovelace singled, scoring one run, Williams singled, scoring two runs, and a wild pitch scored one run.

Petoskey Royals 18U scored five runs on five hits in the bottom of the second inning. Lovelace singled, scoring one run, Jayden Fuelling doubled, scoring one run, Haden Janes singled, scoring one run, and Kolton Horn doubled, scoring two runs.

A sacrifice fly by Lovelace extended the Petoskey Royals 18U lead to 15-0 in the bottom of the third inning.

Peyton Harmon earned the win for Petoskey Royals 18U. They allowed one hit and zero runs over three innings, striking out three and walking none. Cole Masse took the loss for Soo Black Sox 18U. The starting pitcher went one inning, surrendering nine runs on eight hits, striking out none and walking three.

Petoskey Royals 18U accumulated 15 hits in the game. Williams led Petoskey Royals 18U with three hits in three at bats.
