The Soo U16 Greyhounds opened their back-to-back weekend series on Saturday, November 22nd, with an afternoon matchup against the Sudbury U18 Wolves in GNU18HL action. Despite a strong start from the young Greyhounds, the Wolves’ experience and depth proved decisive as Sudbury skated away with a 5–2 victory at the end of regulation.
Greyhounds stuck first, wolves answered late.
The Soo U16 Greyhounds wasted no time getting on the board.
At 4:20, Bryson Palahnuk scored his third of the season unassisted, giving the visitors an early 1–0 lead.
Sudbury responded midway through the frame.
At 12:17, Brady Carriere notched his second of the season, assisted by Denver Mulligan, to tie the game 1–1.
With the period winding down, the Wolves took their first lead.
At 19:37, Mulligan struck again—this time scoring his 10th of the season—off feeds from Brett Moxam and Mekhi Levesque, sending Sudbury into the intermission ahead 2–1.
The second was back-and-forth action before Sudbury extended the lead.
The second period opened with a burst of offense from both sides.
Just 1:14 into the frame, the Soo evened the score at 2–2 when Rocco Dos Reis netted his fifth of the season, assisted by Gage Guzzo and Ashton Neufeld.
Sudbury responded quickly.
At 1:59, Brett Moxam restored the Wolves’ lead with his ninth of the season, picking up assists from Janssen Fransen and Levesque.
The Wolves added insurance later in the period.
At 16:13, Mulligan recorded his second of the game and 11th of the season, again finishing off a setup from Fransen and Moxam, extending the Sudbury lead to 4–2.
In the third, the Wolves locked down a victory.
The Soo pushed to narrow the deficit in the third but could not solve the Sudbury defence.
At 18:12, the Wolves put the game out of reach when Harry Yeamans scored his first of the season unassisted, sealing Sudbury’s 5–2 win.
Goaltending, Sudbury’s Owen Lamothe earned the victory in goal, while Ethan Brewer started between the pipes for the Soo U16 Greyhounds, turning in a determined effort despite Sudbury’s offensive pressure.
The Soo U16 Greyhounds returned to the ice on Sunday afternoon looking to even their weekend series against the Sudbury U18 Wolves after falling in Saturday’s opener. Despite a determined effort at the John Rhodes Community Centre, the Greyhounds were unable to solve Sudbury netminder Jayden Claveau, who backstopped the Wolves to a 3–0 shutout victory in GNU18HL action.
Sudbury strikes shorthanded in the opening frame featured tight checking and disciplined play from both sides, but it was Sudbury who broke through—and did so while killing a penalty.
At 7:34, Landen Lake Rego scored a shorthanded marker, his fourth of the season, after a setup from Gillis O’Daiskey and Mekhi Levesque, giving the Wolves a 1–0 lead that would hold through the period.
Defensive battle continued into the second period saw no scoring, but both teams traded chances.
Soo netminder Phoenix Bell stood tall to keep the Greyhounds within striking distance, while Claveau continued to deny every opportunity at the other end. The Greyhounds generated pressure but couldn’t find the equalizer.
In the third, the Wolves added insurance and sealed the win late with Sudbury extending their lead at 14:15 when Denver Mulligan buried his 12th goal of the season, finishing off a smooth passing play with Brett Moxam and Robert Landry, making it 2–0 Wolves.
With time running down, the Greyhounds pulled Bell for an extra attacker in the final minute.
At 19:53, Sudbury capitalized when Logan Moran scored into the empty net—his seventh of the season—on assists from Mulligan and O’Daiskey, rounding out the scoring and securing the Wolves’ 3–0 win.
Phoenix Bell handled the goaltending duties for the Soo and delivered a strong performance despite the loss. At the opposite end, Jayden Claveau turned aside every shot he faced, earning a well-deserved shutout for Sudbury.
The Greyhounds wrap up their November schedule on the 29th and 30th when they welcome the Kapuskasing Flyers to the John Rhodes Centre, featuring a 6:00 p.m. start on Saturday and a 10:00 a.m. puck drop on Sunday in GNU18HL play.
