U16 Greyhounds Face Tough Weekend on the Road Against North Bay U18 Trappers

On Saturday, November 15th and Sunday, November 16th, the Soo U16 Greyhounds traveled east for a challenging two-game weekend against the North Bay U18 Trappers in GNU18HL action. Despite strong efforts and moments of pushback, the Greyhounds ran into a dominant Trappers squad that controlled both matchups.

Game one in Saturday’s opener in North Bay, the Trappers came out firing, scoring four times in the opening eleven minutes. Scott Szczygiel opened the scoring at 1:29, followed quickly by goals from Ronan Grant (2:10) and Cedar Montreuil (3:46). Szczygiel added his second of the period at 11:40 to put North Bay ahead 4–0 after one.

The Trappers continued to roll in the second, with Grant netting his second of the night at 3:31.

North Bay closed out the game with a five-goal third period, getting markers from William Fournier (7:31), Montreuil (12:14), Francis Popkie (14:30), and Beharie (15:17), completing a commanding performance. Soo goaltenders Phoenix Bell and Ethan Brewer faced heavy pressure throughout, while North Bay’s Carson Ruddy earned the shutout.

Sunday’s rematch shifted to the Powassan Sportsplex, where the U16 Greyhounds looked to bounce back—and they started strong. At 3:31 of the first period, Rocco Dos Reis capitalized on a power play to give the Soo a 1–0 lead. But North Bay responded with three straight goals from Montreuil (10:36), Popkie (17:40), and Beharie (19:01) to close out the period up 3–1.

The Greyhounds cut the lead to 3–2 early in the second when Alexander Priem scored at 2:16, but the Trappers regrouped quickly. Grant, Fournier, and Szczygiel all found the back of the net as North Bay extended their lead to 6–2.

A shorthanded goal by Szczygiel just 10 seconds into the third widened the gap further. The Soo showed resilience when Reegan Dezordo scored at 7:15 to make it 7–3, but North Bay’s depth and pressure carried the remainder of the game. Bell and Brewer split the weekend between the pipes for the Greyhounds, while Logan Coates earned the win for the Trappers.

Next up for the Greyhounds continue their road swing with a midweek matchup in Sudbury on Wednesday, November 19th. The U18 Wolves will host the Soo at Countryside Arena, with puck drop scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
