Greyhound coach Dom Deluca told Saultsports that “we had a phenomenal round robin portion of this new tournament style playoff, winning 6-2 (North Bay), 8-2 (Sons) and 6-2 (Capitals) before getting a bye to the finals. We were running on all cylinders and playing with great pace. Watching this team pursue pucks, forcing turnovers and getting back in transition was a pleasure. Over the weekend against Sudbury Nickel Capitals, we headed into the 3rd period down 2-1 but our relentless play on penalty kill created three short handed goals which gave us the come from behind win. The boys continued to move pucks so well and create offence with their unselfish play, attacking so well below the tops of the circles and off the rush. Sunday turned out to be a different scenario. We had a nervous start and after giving up a couple early goals, one a truly fluky bounce, we found ourselves chasing the game. We were able to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the 3rd but as luck would have it, halfway through the third, one bad bounce off a defender’s skate landed perfectly on a North Bay forwards stick, leading to their third goal and we just could not find the equalizer. After losing only 3 games this year including our showcase weekend, regular season, and playoff round robin, the loss in a “one game” final was devastating for the boys and coaching staff as well. Losing that final is a tough pill to swallow. I felt we deserved better. It simply wasn’t meant to be yesterday but it 100% does not define the skill and talent of these young men.”
“They are and will continue to be first class all around. We made some great memories together and they captured our hearts. They made going to the rink fun and so worthwhile. We have been fortunate to have coached some great teams and this team stacked right up to them with their high-end skill, work ethic, cohesiveness, and character. I sometimes found myself in awe of the moves they pulled off. They were so fun to watch. Congratulations and good luck to the North Bay Trappers as they get ready to represent the North at the All-Ontario’s!” added Deluca.
