U10AA Soo Jr Greyhounds Dominate Opening Weekend in Sudbury

The U10AA Soo Jr. Greyhounds kicked off their inaugural AA season in impressive fashion this past weekend, skating to three straight regular season victories in Sudbury. This strong start comes on the heels of their championship win at the Oktoberfest Tournament in Kitchener just two weeks ago.

The team, led by head coach Matt Chlebus, faced off in a double header against the Sudbury Jr. Wolves on Saturday before wrapping up the weekend with a commanding win over the Nickel City Cubs on Sunday.

The U10AA Soo Jr. Greyhounds opened their season Saturday morning with a 3–1 win over the Sudbury Jr. Wolves. The Jr. Hounds got on the board late in the opening period to take the lead but Sudbury answered back early in the second to make it 1-1. Two unanswered goals in the second and third sealed the 3–1 victory for the Soo team. Player of the game went to Nolan Bernardo with 2 goals and 1 assist.

In Saturday’s second matchup, the Jr. Hounds continued their strong play with a 2–1 win in a tight defensive battle. The Soo opened the scoring midway through the first with Sudbury tying it up in the second period. With just three minutes left in regulation, the Jr. Hounds found the back of the net to secure their second win of the day. Dominic Mallia received player of the game for his highlight worthy game-winning goal.

Sunday’s matchup saw the Soo Jr. Greyhounds offense explode in an 8–2 victory over the Nickel City Cubs. After a mostly scoreless first period, the Soo broke through with a pair of goals just seven seconds apart late in the frame. Nickel City responded quickly to make it 2–1 after one period. The second period belonged to the Soo, who capitalized on three power plays to take a commanding 5–2 lead. The Jr. Hounds added three more goals in the third to finish off a dominant weekend performance. Player of the Game went to Ben Barber for his consistent back check and show stopping goal.

Fueled by a hat trick performance from Nolan Bernardo in Game 3 and a four point weekend from Luca Carchidi (3 goals, 1 assist), the team launched their season with standout performances. Strong play from all six defencemen and steady goaltending, allowing just four goals in three games, anchored a perfect 3-0 start.

This season marks the first time this group has come together as a team and their debut year competing at the AA level. The team’s performance this past weekend reflects their growing chemistry, balanced offence and solid defensive play under Coach Chlebus’s leadership.

With confidence riding high, the team looks to build on this momentum as AA play continues. They hit the road for regular season games in Temiskaming on November 15-16, followed by the Coffey Cup in Mississauga and the International Silver Stick Regional in Sudbury to close out a busy November schedule.
