The Algoma Thunderbird women’s and men’s basketball teams hit the road on Saturday, February 7th, travelling south to Guelph, Ontario for a pair of OUA matchups against the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday, February 8th at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
In the women’s contest, the Thunderbirds faced a tough challenge against the Gryphons, falling by a final score of 85–40. Despite the result, Algoma received strong individual efforts, led by Sault Ste. Marie native Sadie Grawbarger. Grawbarger paced the Thunderbirds with 15 points and six rebounds while logging 33 minutes on the floor. Elia Galdos provided a strong presence in the paint, pulling down eight rebounds and adding nine points in 22 minutes of action. Riya Donnelly also contributed, finishing with seven points and five rebounds while playing 26 minutes in the loss.
On the men’s side, Algoma battled but ultimately came up short, dropping a 97–73 decision to Guelph. Kal-El Alejo led the Thunderbirds offensively, recording 17 points and eight rebounds in 35 minutes of play. Jean-Luc Cubahiro followed closely behind, contributing 15 points and seven rebounds while seeing 39 minutes of court time. Rounding out Algoma’s top performers was Oliver Krisoffersen, who chipped in 12 points and two rebounds over 24 minutes.
The Thunderbirds will now look ahead to the final stretch of their 2025–2026 OUA season, closing out the schedule on the road. Algoma’s first stop will be in London, Ontario on February 13th to take on the Western Mustangs, followed by a February 14th matchup in Windsor against the Lancers. Tipoff for both road dates is set for 6:00 p.m. for the women’s games and 8:00 p.m. for the men’s contests.
