At Jus Jordan Arena on Saturday, November 15th, the third-place (13-6-1-1) Soo Thunderbirds responded emphatically from the previous night’s 9–2 loss in Timmins, earning a strong 7–4 win over the seventh-place (8-10-0-2) Iroquois Falls Storm in NOJHL action.
It took the Thunderbirds just 14 seconds to set the tone, as veteran forward Aiden Atkinson opened the scoring with his ninth of the season, assisted by James Legler and captain Callum McAuley. Deven Jones-McDonald extended the lead at 15:42, finishing a setup from Vincent Bondy and Landon Hill. The Storm answered late in the frame when Mathieu Ouellette found the back of the net at 18:57, cutting the Soo lead to 2–1 after twenty minutes.
The Thunderbirds exploded offensively to start the second. Just 1:26 in, Gavin Killoran restored the two-goal cushion, and only 15 seconds later Jones-McDonald struck again for his second of the night and 13th of the season. At 3:04, affiliate defenceman Dreyon Boissoneau—currently with the Soo U18 Greyhounds of the GNU18HL—recorded his first NOJHL goal on the power play, pushing the lead to 5–1. The Storm responded at 5:03 with a marker from Owen Goodwin, but the Thunderbirds carried a 5–2 advantage into the third.
Iroquois Falls made things interesting in the final frame. Lucas Peever scored a power-play goal at 12:23, narrowing the gap, but McAuley restored the Soo’s three-goal lead less than 90 seconds later with a determined unassisted effort. Goodwin added his second of the contest at 15:14 to bring the Storm within two, but with the goaltender pulled in the dying seconds, Shea Chornley sealed the game with an empty-net tally at the buzzer for the Thunderbirds.
Nathan Maguire tended the net for the Thunderbirds and turning away 16 of 20 shots, while Alex Hall got the start for the Storm and finished the game with stopping 21 of 27 shots in the loss.
The Soo concludes their three-game road swing on Sunday, November 16th with a 2:00 p.m afternoon matchup in Kirkland Lake, where they’ll take on the Gold Miners in NOJHL action.
