The Algoma University Thunderbird Men’s Curling team, composed of Marius Klein, Noah Mercier, Ben Miskiw, and Jonah Santa Maria, competed at the Trent Curling Invitational hosted by Trent University on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
The team faced a challenging start in their first match against Durham, falling behind early after Durham scored three points in the opening end. Algoma responded with a strong second end, scoring three of their own, but ultimately were unable to regain the lead, conceding three points in the seventh end to finish with a loss.
The Thunderbirds bounced back in their second game against Ottawa. Algoma opened with two points in the first end and followed with steals of two and one, building a 5–0 advantage. Solid defensive play and strategic shot-making allowed them to limit Ottawa’s scoring opportunities, securing their first victory of the tournament.
In their final round-robin match against Ontario Tech, the Thunderbirds again started strong, stealing two points in the first end and maintaining control throughout the game with additional steals and solid defensive play, earning their second win.
With Algoma, Ottawa, and Durham each finishing the round-robin with 2–1 records, pool rankings were determined by the last stone draw (LSD) from the first game. The Thunderbirds secured first place in their pool with the lowest LSD of 37.5 cm, highlighting their precision and consistency.
Algoma’s Head Coach of Men’s Curling Tom Coulterman “was pleased with their performance in their first tournament of the season and looking forward to maintaining this momentum heading into the new year when they compete at the Brock Invitational on January 17–18, 2026.”
